Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Over the past two weeks, I set up a simple therapy room in the manor.
Every day, step by step, I gave Madam Qin counseling.
Thanks to my efforts, along with the sleeping pills she took at night, Madam Qin’s anxiety and insomnia finally eased a little.
She even abolished the rule requiring everyone to pay their respects at the Hour of the Tiger.
The two of us enjoyed a glorious half month of sleeping in.
Then, one day, a shriek jolted me awake from my dreams.
Someone dragged me out from under the covers.
They used so much force they nearly dislocated my arm.
I hadn’t even had time to open my eyes.
All I heard was that shrill voice yammering in my ear.
“My heavens, what newlywed wife sleeps until this hour?”
“This is a disgrace to the family! Hurry, hurry, get up! When you were still in your maiden home, did no one teach you how to serve your husband and in-laws?”
The pain made me fling her hand off at once.
“If you love sticking your nose into everything so much, go be the Pacific police.”
“You police the heavens, you police the earth, and now you’re policing people’s sleep?”
The woman froze.
She stared at me in utter disbelief.
“To treat an elder with such rudeness and savagery-what kind of behavior is this?”
“I am your husband’s wet nurse. It would not be too much for you to call me mother-in-law.”
“It was bad enough that when I returned to the manor, you did not come serve me tea and pay your respects. But to be this lazy, and then dare speak such wild words?”
“I’ll have Jisheng divorce you under the Seven Grounds for Repudiation. Then you’ll learn just how formidable I am!”
Wet nurse?
My ears perked up.
I woke up instantly and gave her a careful once-over.
“You’re Qin Jisheng’s wet nurse?”
She straightened her back and smoothed her sleeves. “Indeed.”
“Then Qin Jisheng must be back too, right?”
“Naturally.”
I looked at her with a smile that wasn’t quite a smile.
“Wonderful. I’ve been waiting for you two for a very long time.”
My stare made her skin crawl.
She retreated half a step.
“You wretched girl. Have you gone mad?”
I threw off the quilt and put on my outer robe.
Then I tilted my head and smiled.
“Not mad, no. Though there is a bit of mama’s-boy syndrome involved.”
“Cuiguo! Oh, no-Xiao Huan. Smash her mouth for me.”
At my command, Xiao Huan slammed the door shut with a bang.
Just as we had rehearsed.
She went straight up and slapped Nanny Sun twice across the face.
Nanny Sun didn’t react at all.
She only stared wide-eyed, clutching her already swelling cheeks.
“You dare hit me?”
“Do you know who I am-”
Before she could finish,
Xiao Huan cut her off with two more crisp slaps.
I sat down unhurriedly and took a sip of tea.
“That’s right. You’re the one I’m hitting. Didn’t I just confirm your identity a moment ago?”
She let out a scream.
By instinct, she tried to get around Xiao Huan and grab my hair.
Xiao Huan lifted her foot and kicked her back.
Then she rushed up, grabbed Nanny Sun by the collar, and slapped her several more times in quick succession.
“Pah! Who do you think you are, trying to touch our young lady?”
For the past two weeks,
I had told Xiao Huan she didn’t have to do anything else-just practice her arm strength.
After so many slaps,
Nanny Sun was seeing stars and couldn’t get a word out.
I was very satisfied.
I was just about to give Xiao Huan a raise.
When suddenly, the door was kicked open from the outside.
A man who, by visual estimate, was only about five foot five charged in.
He looked at Nanny Sun on the floor, then at me.
Rage flared in his eyes.
“You wretch, what are you doing?”
