Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Our two families lived in the same direction.
We had just reached Qiu Yun’s front door when I saw a refined-looking man in a white shirt pushing a bicycle toward us.
The neighbors he passed all teased him. “Song Qiao, bought more fish to nourish your wife again?”
The man smiled shyly.
“She likes it.”
So this was my grandfather.
He looked like someone with a really good temper.
Compared to that scumbag father of mine, my grandfather and he were heaven and earth.
Was my dad the result of some genetic mutation?
When Song Qiao saw me, he hurried over in a few quick steps and asked nervously, “How’s the baby?”
For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.
Qiu Yun’s eyes were a little red. “Let’s talk at home.”
After I walked them to their door, I wandered around the alley for a while.
When I reached the back door of Qiu Yun’s house, I heard a burst of clattering and crashing.
I looked in through the crack in the door. Song Qiao was no longer the gentle man I’d just seen. Qiu Yun had run into the courtyard, and he grabbed her viciously by the hair and dragged her back inside.
“You want to abort the baby? Who the hell gave you the guts? Even if it’s some deformed thing, you’re giving birth to it first!”
That ferocious expression slowly overlapped with the image of my father in my memories.
I froze in terror.
When I was little and didn’t know any better, I often said my grandfather had died too early, that he hadn’t stayed with Grandma and made her suffer.
Back then, Grandma only smiled and said she had stopped suffering a long time ago.
So this was what she meant.
Had she been living in hell starting from this moment?
Hearing Qiu Yun’s quiet sobs, rage shot straight to my head.
I was someone who had already died once.
What was there for me to be afraid of? They were the ones who should be afraid, because I was capable of going insane.
I kicked the door open, snatched up the broom leaning in the corner, and charged in.
“Why the hell didn’t you die sooner?”
I swung with all my strength and brought it down on his back.
Song Qiao was in so much pain that he let go at once, his body twisting as he screamed.
I took the chance to pull Qiu Yun behind me.
Song Qiao came back to his senses and pointed at me, cursing, “You bitch, Li Fang, you rotten hag! You’re the one who talked this slut into getting an abortion, aren’t you? You want to hurt my seed? Not a chance!”
“Oh, screw you. Stop dragging my mother into it. If you’ve got the guts, curse out my grandfather!”
Song Qiao froze.
Though he didn’t understand why, he still burst into a torrent of abuse.
“I’ll curse your whole damn family! Your grandfather is a beast, and your dad can’t be anything good either. Otherwise, how could he have a poisonous little viper like you?”
I felt thoroughly refreshed.
“Ah. Music to my ears.”
Song Qiao said, “Are you sick in the head?”
“Mm. Runs in the family.”
He stopped wasting words with me and reached out to grab Qiu Yun again. I immediately picked up the pitchfork from the corner and drove it hard into the haystack, warning him, “This time it’s the hay. Next time, it’s you.”
I brought Qiu Yun back home.
She seemed badly frightened. Sitting dazed on the edge of the bed, she stroked her belly for a long time.
“Liar. When I got pregnant, he said he’d never hit me again…”
“With domestic violence, there’s only zero times or countless times. You’re better off believing a sow can climb a tree than believing a man’s words.”
I didn’t know what else to say to comfort her. After Qiu Yun lay down to rest, I still couldn’t swallow my anger, so I ran out and smashed Song Qiao’s window with a rock.
The next day, Song Qiao came to settle the score, as expected, and even brought the neighbors with him.
“Everyone, take a good look. This is Li Fang. She can’t get married herself, so she came to ruin our Qiu Yun. Now she’s even driven a wedge between husband and wife.”
Fine. Trying to guilt-trip me, were you?
Too bad I had no morals.
I lowered my head and searched around for a handy weapon. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect Qiu Yun to come charging out with a knife in her hand. With tears in her eyes, she said, “If it weren’t for Xiao Fang, I might have been beaten to death by this animal yesterday. Song Qiao, don’t come looking for me again. Let’s get divorced.”
