Chapter 1

After I breathed my last, my soul sat coldly amid a scatter of shattered glass.

I watched the woman with heavy makeup scream and flee.

I watched Song Qiyun-my biological father, and the murderer who had killed me-rub his face, his eyes bloodshot, then pull a large suitcase out of the room and begin packing up my corpse.

I drifted closer, staring hard into his eyes.

I wanted to see even the slightest trace of regret in them. The slightest hint of grief.

Unfortunately, there was none.

His movements were brisk and efficient, as if he were cleaning up a pile of garbage.

A bang came from the doorway.

Grandma, who had hurried over, collapsed to the floor. She stared at my limp body on the ground, her mouth open, but not a sound came out.

“Peipei…”

I wanted to help her up, but my fingers passed right through her body.

Oh… I was already dead.

With only a month left before the college entrance exam, I had been beaten to death by my own father.

I never got to attend the university I had promised Grandma I would go to.

And I never managed to take Mom and escape this home.

I was so unwilling to accept it.

Suddenly, everything before my eyes went pitch-black, and an ethereal voice sounded by my ear.

[I’ll give you a chance. Do you want to live again?]

[Yes!]

[Then let’s see what you do with it.]

When I opened my eyes again, I was sitting in an office. Across from me sat a woman whose features looked strangely familiar.

“Xiao Fang? Is there something wrong with the baby?”

A gentle voice reached my ears.

I was completely baffled-until I saw the form on the desk. Under Patient Name was written: Qiu Yun.

?

Wasn’t that my grandmother’s name?

And on the corner of my desk was a nameplate: Doctor on Duty, Li Fang.

If I remembered correctly, when I was little and played at Grandma’s house, she had once told me her best friend when she was young was named Li Fang. The two of them had grown up together, and Li Fang later became a doctor.

Slowly, I realized that I seemed to have been reborn. Not only that, I had gone back forty years and become my grandmother’s best friend.

Which meant…

The child I was examining right now-if I counted the timing…

Wasn’t that my scumbag father?

Heh. It wasn’t that karma never came. Its time simply hadn’t arrived yet.

Seeing that I hadn’t spoken for a long while, Qiu Yun grew anxious.

“Xiao Fang, if there’s a problem, just tell me. I can take it. The baby… is it unhealthy?”

I put away the stethoscope and said without the slightest hesitation, “It’s intellectually disabled. I recommend terminating the pregnancy.”

Qiu Yun froze. “You can tell that it’s intellectually disabled?”

I said, “Well… by analyzing the heartbeat to determine brain development. It’s an emerging technology. You know me-I’ve always had your best interests at heart. When have I ever lied to you?”

Only then did Qiu Yun begin to panic a little, tears welling in her eyes.

“This is my first child…”

“If you keep this child, you’ll suffer for the rest of your life.”

Because he was even more tormenting than cerebral palsy.

Song Qiyun was pure scum. Not only was he unworthy of being a father-he didn’t even deserve to be called human.

For as long as I could remember, our home had never known a single day of peace.

When he was happy, he hit people.

When he was unhappy, he hit people even more.

If it wasn’t me, it was my mother.

A month ago, the old house back in our hometown collapsed, and Grandma had no choice but to move in with us.

She slept in the storage room. Every day, she was careful not to make a sound and even took the initiative to do all the housework.

Even so, Song Qiyun still despised having one more mouth to feed. At the slightest provocation, he would punch and kick Grandma.

When Mom tried to stop him, he beat her too.

That evening after school, I saw Grandma at the intersection, staggering with her luggage on her back. In front of the apartment building, she was digging through the trash can and pulled out half a steamed bun.

Just as she was about to put it in her mouth, she saw me. In the next second, she turned her face away.

“Grandma!” I rushed over and grabbed her hand. “What happened?”

Tears shone in Grandma’s cloudy eyes. “Peipei, after Grandma leaves, you have to live well. Go to college. You must go to college.”

Holding back my tears, I told Grandma to wait where she was. But the moment I reached the entrance to our building, I saw Mom run out crying, her face covered in injuries.

I went up the stairs and saw Song Qiyun lying in bed with a heavily made-up woman.

I stared at him just like that, hatred burning through me, and said the words I had wanted to say for a very long time.

“Beast.”

Song Qiyun was stunned.

The woman beside him laughed and nudged him with her foot. “Hear that? Your daughter called you a beast.”

That one provocative sentence from the woman enraged him completely-and sent me down the road to death.

Now that I had been given another life, I would rather cut all of this off at the source. Even if I disappeared along with it, I didn’t want to see Grandma and Mom suffer for an entire lifetime again.

I didn’t care whether it was selfish. I didn’t care about any paradox.

At that moment, I had only one thought.

I wanted him dead.

So I hardened my heart and brainwashed Qiu Yun.

She trusted me deeply and promised she would go back and discuss it properly with her husband.

At the mention of that, I suddenly remembered that Grandpa had died before I was born. I had never met him even once.

Out of curiosity, I offered to escort Qiu Yun home.
