Chapter 1
Chapter 1
My roommate, Chen Ling, had disappeared.
It started a month ago.
Chen Ling came from a rural family, and she never had much spending money each month. But a month ago, she suddenly seemed a lot more comfortable financially.
She even treated me to a meal, saying she’d recently found a decent part-time job that paid pretty well.
The job she was talking about was at a newly opened ancient-town tourism project out in the suburbs.
They put on daily martial-arts-for-marriage performances there, and they needed someone to play the bride.
For each event she took, she had to spend an entire afternoon dressed as the bride. One event paid three to four hundred yuan.
If she took two or three events a month, she could make over a thousand.
Three days ago, she came to me looking a little excited.
“Ruyi, I got a big job.” She pulled a small stack of cash wrapped in red paper from her bag. “All I have to do is play the bride for one day, and I’ll make three thousand!”
Three thousand yuan was no small amount for a college student.
I looked at that red envelope and couldn’t help frowning.
My instincts told me something was wrong with it.
My name is Yun Ruyi. I am the Dragon King’s Wife, and more than that, I am a Demon Subduer.
When I found out Chen Ling planned to take that job, I tried to talk her out of it.
“Chen Ling, I cast a divination for you. It’s an ill omen. That day isn’t suitable for travel.”
Chen Ling knew I understood these things, so she began to hesitate.
She wasn’t the kind of girl who was greedy for money. After thinking it over again and again, she decided to return the red envelope and turn down the job.
Hearing that, I finally relaxed.
But when I woke up this morning, Chen Ling was gone.
She had sent me a message:
[Ruyi, my mom fell off her bike yesterday and got hurt. My family needs money right now, so I took that job. Don’t worry. I’ll be careful about everything.]
I called her at once, but after several calls in a row, no one picked up.
With no time to think, I called Jiang Shaotian and explained the situation to him.
He was a junior member of the Jiang Family of Phoenix City, one of the Ten Great Spirit Sects. With him around, it would be much easier for me to act.
He came to meet me quickly, and we drove straight to the suburban tourist attraction-Longmen Ancient Town.
It was the weekend, and the ancient town was quite crowded.
Plenty of parents had brought their children here to play.
There were also girls dressed in hanfu taking photos and checking in around the town.
Jiang Shaotian and I had no time to admire the scenery. We headed straight for the martial-arts-for-marriage event site.
In front of a large stage, the event was already nearing its end.
A professional bride in wedding robes, her face covered by a bridal veil, was bowing in the wedding ceremony with the professional groom opposite her.
Jiang Shaotian asked me, “Sister Ruyi, is that Chen Ling?”
I shook my head. “No.”
The strange part was that I could no longer sense Chen Ling’s aura anywhere in the entire ancient town.
It was as if she had vanished from this world into thin air.
Before long, the performance onstage ended.
When the professional bride came down to change clothes, I stopped her.
“Hi, miss. I’m a student at a nearby university, and I’m hoping to earn some extra spending money with a part-time job. I was wondering if you could recommend anything?”
I grinned, showing the two dimples in my cheeks.
The girl was nice. She quickly pulled me into a WeChat group.
“If there’s work, the organizers will post it in here. If you’re quick enough, you can grab a slot.”
