Chapter 4
I turned around and looked at He Qi.
He was lying sprawled on the messy grave mound.
His eyes were filled with terror as he stared at me.
“Y-you… what are you going to do?”
I walked right up to him and set my foot on his chest.
“All these years, you’ve been fooling the villagers with ghost marriages.”
“You abducted young girls and buried them alive.”
“Then you helped that Rat Ghost suck their Essential Souls at midnight.”
“After killing so many innocent girls, He Qi, aren’t you afraid of retribution?”
He Qi’s face twisted into a grimace.
As if remembering something, he suddenly cracked a grin and laughed.
“Retribution?”
“I, He Qi, spent the first forty years of my life in poverty and scorn.”
“Everyone looked down on me.”
“If not for the Rat Immortal’s favor, how could I have such glory!”
He grew more and more excited, his body trembling uncontrollably.
I frowned when I saw a flash of red light flicker in his eyes.
What was that…?
“It’s all your fault!”
He lunged at me, hands curled like claws.
“You destroyed everything!”
“Die!”
Watching his crazed behavior, I simply formed a Mind-Clearing Spell and slapped it onto his forehead.
He Qi instantly froze.
From the top of his head, I slowly pulled out a wriggling black thread.
“That Rat Ghost actually parted with a wisp of his Demon Soul and placed it on you?”
With some disgust, I pinched the Demon Soul and put it into my Qiankun Pouch.
Just as I stored it away, a scream echoed from the forest.
A gust of wind swept through the trees.
The Black Dragon Shadow flew back, a huge White-haired Rat clamped in his jaws.
He dropped the White-haired Rat right in front of me, then coiled around my arm.
The White-haired Rat was already dead.
I lowered my gaze and looked at it for a moment.
Then I reached out to stroke the insubstantial Black Dragon.
“Burn it.”
The Black Dragon let out a soft snort and spat a small flame onto the White-haired Rat’s body.
In an instant, it turned into a pile of ash.
He Qi and the others lay scattered on the ground, completely unconscious.
The Black Dragon darted around restlessly.
I calmed him down: “We’re in a civilized society now. You really can’t just eat people.”
I fished He Qi’s phone out of his pocket.
I climbed to the highest point on the mountain to find a signal and dialed 110.
“Hello? I want to report a crime.”
“In the very east of Nanjiang City, there’s a place called Shipan Village.”
“Someone there is trafficking young girls.”
“Yes, please come as quickly as possible.”
“Who am I? I’m one of the trafficked girls.”
By the time the police cars arrived, the first light of dawn was breaking.
The villagers were all subdued while they were still asleep.
When the police found me, I was lying in a coffin, sound asleep.
Hearing the noise, I crawled out from inside.
A young policewoman turned as pale as a sheet.
She looked at me, then at He Qi and the others, whose condition was unknown.
Her face grew even more horrified.
I froze for a second, then immediately made my eyes red and threw myself into her arms.
“Waaah, officer sister, you’re finally here! I was so scared!”
The policewoman instantly relaxed.
She patted my back. “Don’t be scared, don’t be scared.”
He Qi, who had just regained a bit of consciousness, shakily pointed a finger at me.
Then his eyes rolled back and he fainted again.
…
The case dragged on for a long time before it was fully handled.
Everyone involved in Shipan Village was arrested.
I heard that the main perpetrator, He Qi, is now mentally unstable.
He’s always muttering strange things to himself.
One moment he says he saw a huge rat.
The next, he’s on his knees kowtowing and shouting, “Long live the Rat Immortal!”
Not long after that, he’ll cower in a corner, screaming that the Black Dragon is going to eat him.
…
When I came out after my final round of assisting the investigation, two people immediately rushed up to me.
One was my college roommate, Chen Ling.
The other was my friend, Jiang Shaotian.
Chen Ling grabbed my arms and looked me up and down, then let out a long sigh of relief.
“Ruyi! You scared me to death!”
She gave me a light smack.
“That night I offered to go with you to the convenience store, but you refused.”
“Then you ended up trafficked and went missing for all these days!”
“Thank goodness you’re okay, or I wouldn’t be able to live with myself for the rest of my life!”
“I can’t even imagine how a delicate, fragile person like you managed to survive these days!”
To be honest, I had originally just come here for a quiet little trip.
But by a twist of fate, I discovered traces of the Rat Ghost.
Chen Ling would never have guessed that I deliberately walked straight into that trafficking case.
Right now, she was badly shaken, clutching me and sighing deeply.
Jiang Shaotian’s eyes nearly bugged out of his head. “Delicate and fragile? Her?”
I shot him a light glance, and he instantly shut his mouth.
“Xiaoling, I’m a bit hungry,” I said, patting Chen Ling.
She paused, then quickly said, “I’ll go buy you something to eat. Wait here for me.”
With that, she dashed into a nearby supermarket.
I untied the Qiankun Pouch from my waist and tossed it to Jiang Shaotian.
“Hold onto this. We’ll deal with it once we’re back in Fengcheng.”
Jiang Shaotian caught it and weighed it in his hand.
“Just one wisp of Demon Soul? That doesn’t add up.”
“The Rat Ghost sucked the Essential Souls of so many girls. He shouldn’t have only this much cultivation.”
I gave a light cough and turned my head away, a little awkward.
Jiang Shaotian immediately caught on and blurted out, “Your husband ate it again?”
I didn’t care at all. “He’s been sealed away for so long and can’t come out. It’s been really tough on him. So what if he has a little snack?”
Jiang Shaotian let out a weird cry. “A little snack? You call that a little snack?”
I glanced behind him. “Xiaoling, you’re back already?”
Chen Ling handed me the food, then turned to Jiang Shaotian. “What were you saying about a little snack just now? Ruyi’s constitution is weak as it is. Don’t you dare take her to eat any more of those junk snacks.”
Jiang Shaotian: “…”
