Chapter 2

【Whoa. Why does the supporting girl seem kind of devoted?】

【Wasn’t she only after his money? Then why is she crying like that?】

The moment I saw the comments, I hurriedly lowered my head and wiped away my tears.

When I looked up, Song Jingyuan had somehow turned around. He stood ahead of me, watching with a complicated expression.

Afraid he might demand the breakup money back, I quickly turned away, slung my bag over my shoulder, and left. One of my white sneakers landed on a loose paving stone, splashing filthy black water across the toe.

I admit my retreat looked a little wretched.

At least I got away.

That evening, I sat in my rented apartment, calculating my money with one hand and sending out résumés with the other.

Song Jingyuan had given me seventy thousand yuan. The moment I left his villa complex, I ducked into a bank and deposited every cent.

Another thirty thousand and I would have reached five million in savings.

The economy was bad, and I did not dare make risky investments. A fixed-term deposit paid less interest, but at least it earned money instead of losing it.

After settling the final figure, I lay on my bed and at last had time to feel sad.

I hated losing the money. I hated losing Song Jingyuan too.

When I had first graduated, a crooked rental agent cheated me out of my twenty thousand yuan in savings. Then I joined an exploitative company that kept me as an unpaid intern for three months before inventing an excuse to fire me on the very last day.

I met Song Jingyuan when I was too poor to afford food.

Perhaps once your luck sank low enough, it had nowhere to go but up. I had always been told my looks were too plain, yet by chance I was exactly Song Jingyuan’s type.

He was generous. He gave me a hundred thousand yuan every month, and every gift he bought me was expensive.

I could never repay him, so I praised him with even greater enthusiasm.

He liked me clinging to him. He liked me acting cute.

To provide better emotional support, I even took acting lessons. I could turn three parts love into a performance worth ten.

And after day upon day of Song Jingyuan stuffing money into my hands, my love for him had long since surpassed ten.

Good fortune arrived quickly and ended just as fast.

I lay staring at the ceiling, wondering where I would go tomorrow to scrape together a living, when those strange comments began scrolling in front of me again.

【What is wrong with the male lead? He let our precious girl find out about the supporting girl. Now she’s angry. My poor baby.】

【If I remember correctly, wasn’t the supporting girl dating him first? The heroine’s anger makes no sense.】

【Why are you being so argumentative? She’s only a kept woman. How could she possibly count as the official girlfriend?】

The comments descended into another quarrel. Just as the movement began to make my eyes ache, one especially vivid line put an end to the battle.

【Has the male lead lost his mind? He actually wants to use the supporting girl to make our precious girl jealous? Let’s see if she has the nerve to accept.】

The instant the comment vanished, my phone rang.

“Come to Chi K. Private Room 305.”

Song Jingyuan’s voice came through the phone, terse as ever.

Remembering that last comment, I felt a little guilty. “We already broke up. Maybe I shouldn’t—”

“Fifty thousand.”

“But—”

“One hundred and fifty.”

“Still—”

“Three hundred thousand.”

“I’m on my way.”

I left the apartment, climbed onto my bicycle, and pedaled into the night wind toward the location Song Jingyuan had sent.

The comments cursed me almost the entire way.

Let them. The job paid three hundred thousand for one visit. In my shoes, they might have run faster than I did.

Song Jingyuan wanted me to act like a hopelessly devoted lapdog in front of the heroine.

By then, I had more or less accepted my place.

But when I entered the private room, the word darling died on my lips and my smile froze.

The woman standing before me—the heroine in the comments, their precious girl—

was Qin Zhenzhen.

The false heiress who had driven me out of the Qin family.

In my fourth year as Song Jingyuan’s kept woman, he tired of me and asked to break up.

I had meant to cry, make a scene, and threaten to kill myself to keep him, putting on the same...
