Chapter 7

I gave a noncommittal hum and picked up the inventory list to look through it.

Wen Su had quite a lot of assets.

Some she had earned herself, while others were given to her by the Lin family.

Lin Zheng didn’t like her, but the late Old Madam Lin had been very fond of her and had gifted her many valuable things.

She had left all of this to her daughter, Lin Zhilan.

Indeed, the will made no mention of anyone from the Wen family.

Although Wen Min was her biological younger sister, their parents had divorced long ago.

Wen Su had gone with their father, while Wen Min had gone with their mother.

Their paths diverged, and they had eventually cut off all contact. Wen Su hadn’t seen her mother or sister for many years.

Her father had passed away early, so she had grown up lonely and isolated.

Because of that, she was starved for affection.

When she met Lin Zheng, she threw herself at him like a moth to a flame.

She wasn’t just looking for love; she was begging for it.

In their relationship, she was a humble pleaser.

When she couldn’t get what she wanted, she fell into a deep depression and eventually left this world, heart-weary and disillusioned.

It wasn’t until after she died that Wen Min accidentally discovered her sister had married into a wealthy family and rushed over to play the role of the wicked supporting female character.

She tried to please Lin Zheng just as Wen Su had, only to end up just as miserable.

They both saw themselves as too lowly and Lin Zheng as too grand.

That was wrong.

I countered nonchalantly.

“My sister and I weren’t close, so it’s normal that I’m not in her will. But why isn’t President Lin’s name mentioned either? What? Were they not close either? I’m a bit confused-how do two people who aren’t close end up having a child? Did someone drug them? Oh my god, did they call the police?”

The assistant looked like he was about to have a breakdown.

I scoffed inwardly. What a lightweight. If you don’t have the skills, don’t try to provoke people.

I tossed the documents onto the table.

“Transfer the assets to Lanlan’s name as quickly as possible. The sooner it’s settled, the sooner I leave. Otherwise, if I stay here every day, your President Lin is likely to have a heart attack.”

The assistant’s attitude became much more respectful.

“I will get on it immediately.”

For several days in a row, Lin Zheng didn’t return.

Lin Zhilan and I spent a wonderful time together as a duo.

During the week, she went to school, and every time I picked her up, I brought her some treats.

She would share them with her classmates, but before she did, I would make sure to ask if any of the other children had allergies.

Soon, she made a few friends.

Gradually, the parents of those children began to bring things to share with Lin Zhilan as well.

This positive interaction made us both very happy.

On the weekends, I took her to check out various scenic spots, amusement parks, museums, and snack streets, capturing her smiles on camera.

At first, she was restrained, thinking that eating street food was unhygienic.

Later, she would order naturally: “Auntie, I want this one, this one, and that one.”

I made an agreement with her that she could use a phone for twenty minutes every day.

She could decide what to watch during those twenty minutes, as long as it wasn’t anything illegal or against public decency.

Lin Zhilan followed the rule perfectly. When the time was up, she would consciously hand over the phone and go finish her homework.

She really was an exceptionally well-behaved child-so well-behaved it made my heart ache for her.

I decided to do something for Lin Zhilan before I left.

I carefully selected a collection of books covering child psychology, law, school bullying, the struggles of growing up as a girl, and biographies of outstanding women.

I also created a plan for her, arranging her daily routine and a training schedule.

And then there were the little toys.

I discovered she particularly liked tiny things: small notebooks, small pens, small bottles, and small abacuses.

They were clearly very cheap, yet she couldn’t put them down. In contrast, the expensive, exquisite toys Lin Zheng had sent were left gathering dust on the shelves.
