Chapter 2
Chapter 2
The reason I started dating Pei Zhan was purely because I was too much of a sycophant.
Three years ago, I partnered with my senior to start a game studio.
Pei Zhan was one of the investors she brought in.
In the early days of building the business, my senior and I were shamelessly obsequious around our investors.
I was slightly better at it than she was because I was exceptionally good at reading the room.
That led Pei Zhan to mistake my attentiveness for romantic interest.
At one dinner, as usual, I drank on behalf of Pei Zhan for the entire evening because he had a terrible tolerance for alcohol.
As he drove my senior and me home, he suddenly spoke up:
“It must have been exhausting chasing me for so long without getting a response, right?”
My head was spinning from the alcohol, and I asked blankly, “What?”
The light turned red just then.
Pei Zhan glanced back at me. His devastatingly handsome face was marked by unmistakable arrogance.
“You don’t have to be shy. There are plenty of people who like me, and plenty who pursue me, too.”
I immediately realized that Pei Zhan had misunderstood and started to explain, “You misunderst-”
The next second, my senior, who had passed out against my shoulder, pinched the soft flesh at my waist.
The pain instantly reminded me that Pei Zhan was our investor.
So I fell silent.
When Pei Zhan parked in the underground garage of our residential complex, he rested both hands on the steering wheel. Strands of black hair fell casually across his forehead, and beneath his sharp brows lay a pair of dark eyes. His refined features gave him a carefree, unrestrained air.
In the darkness of night, he let out a soft laugh and advised me, “You should know that I’ve dated plenty of women, and that there’s someone I’ve always kept hidden in my heart. I won’t accept you, so give up.”
I didn’t want to lose his investment, so I continued keeping silent.
Unfortunately, that silence transformed me from a lowly client-side partner in an urban workplace drama into a pathetic simp in a trashy romance series.
My senior wasn’t wrong. After all, Pei Zhan had rejected me.
I had simply believed her nonsense and continued currying favor with Pei Zhan in my usual humble client-side manner.
But one day, something suddenly went wrong in Pei Zhan’s head.
He unilaterally announced that he accepted my pursuit.
My senior said again, “It’s fine, it’s fine. His longest relationship lasted three months, and every one of his ex-girlfriends received a hefty breakup settlement afterward.”
Thinking about Pei Zhan’s incomparable looks;
his eight-pack abs and perfectly sculpted waist;
the enormous breakup settlement;
and my parents’ ceaseless pressure to go on blind dates,
I admit that my heart began to stir.
Half-reluctantly and half-willingly, I agreed to my senior’s terrible idea.
And now, three years have passed.
My mother has even started pressuring me to get married.
Yet Pei Zhan still hasn’t dumped me, nor has he shown any actual signs of cheating.
Even his legendary white moonlight, who was supposedly far away in Germany, has yet to appear.
To be fair, over these three years, Pei Zhan has done a decent job fulfilling the duties of a boyfriend, aside from the fact that he doesn’t love me.
He puts in the effort in bed, and he’s impressive outside of it, too.
When my mother fell ill and couldn’t get a hospital bed, he settled everything with a single phone call.
When my father’s company was on the verge of bankruptcy, he offered support and invested another sum of money.
Everyone around me kept praising him.
They said he was worth putting aside my pride to pursue for so long.
They all hoped that I would marry him.
Even though he had terrible boundaries with other women and enormous flaws when it came to relationships.
Unfortunately, they were going to be disappointed.
Once I propose, he’ll simply dump me.
Then I will be left heartbroken, sobbing my eyes out while clutching my enormous breakup settlement.

Long-Awaited Breakup
When I was forced to propose to Pei Zhan, I saw his group chat:
[If she dares bring up marriage, I’ll dump her on the spot.]
I blinked, and my heart suddenly soared.
