I typed out a tentative message:
[Do you… never bring people you’re not close with home?]
Lu Yan replied with one word:
[Yeah.]
Case closed!
Someone as traditional, refined, and old-fashioned as him definitely had very clear boundaries.
So, he thought we weren’t close.
That was why he refused to take me home to pet his cat.
I opened his Moments and carefully went through every single post.
Then I came up with a brilliant way to get close to him fast.
Clutching a pink paper bag, I headed to the large lecture hall where Lu Yan had class during the long break, when the campus was at its most crowded.
He was sitting in his seat reading.
He looked very much like a ragdoll cat with a serious expression.
“Classmate Lu Yan!”
The moment he saw me, he was clearly startled. His eyes blinked behind his lenses, and a faint red crept up to the tips of his ears.
I stuffed the little pink bag into his hands and grinned at him.
“Classmate Lu Yan, open it and see if you like it.”
He took it and glanced warily at the classmates around us, his voice dropping several octaves.
“Are you sure… I can open this in front of so many people?”
I nodded furiously.
“Of course you can! Hurry up and open it.”
He carefully unwrapped it.
Inside lay a little cat scarf I had stayed up all night knitting.
“Happy birthday, Lu Yan!”
The afternoon sunlight streamed through the window lattice and fell across my face.
In the halo of light, my smile was dazzling.
Lu Yan stared at me in a daze. By the time he came back to himself, even the tips of his ears had gone redder.
Trying to cover it up, he adjusted his glasses.
“…Thank you.”
The surrounding peanut gallery instantly perked up.
“Lu Yan actually accepted a gift from a girl?”
“The campus heartthrob’s face is so red…”
In my heart, I gave myself a victory sign.
Plan successful!
He’d accepted my gift, and I’d celebrated his birthday for him. Surely we counted as friends now, right?
Time to let me pet the cat!
“I knitted it myself,” I emphasized.
He rubbed the scarf between his fingers, his gaze darting away.
“I like it very much.”
“I stayed up the whole night making it,” I pressed my advantage.
He lifted his eyes to look at me, his gaze dark as ink.
“I understand your feelings.”
The moment had come! I lowered my voice.
“Then about what I said last night…?”
His Adam’s apple bobbed, and he turned his face away.
“I’m rather traditional. I need some time. Next month…”
The corners of my mouth immediately drooped.
He caught sight of my expression and pressed his lips together.
“Next weekend.”
I instantly deployed the pity tactic, gazing up at him with the most innocent eyes possible as I lightly tugged on his sleeve.
“The next sunrise, meaning tomorrow! Please?”
As if he’d been burned, he gritted out, “Fine.”
“Thank you!”
I went from cloudy to sunny in an instant, beaming like a flower in bloom. “I’ll definitely prepare properly!”
He looked at me, his gaze heavy, his voice carrying a sense of throwing caution to the wind.
“So will I.”
I didn’t get it. What did he need to prepare?
