Chapter 2

I never expected to see Shen Luzhou again in a situation like this.

The last time we’d met was three years ago, when Shen Luzhou, our school’s top science scorer, went onstage to give a speech.

When I handed him the trophy, I tripped on the red carpet and went flying-trophy and all.

After that, he and Chen Ji got into the same university.

They even became roommates.

It seemed like every time we met, I was making a fool of myself.

Chen Ji looked a little annoyed.

“Luzhou, you don’t have to bother with her.”

“Let her go back wherever she came from.”

The moment he finished speaking, Shen Luzhou let out a soft laugh. “Aren’t you misunderstanding something?”

“My girlfriend came to deliver cake. What does that have to do with you?”

…

Because of that one sentence, I attended Chen Ji’s birthday party that night as Shen Luzhou’s “girlfriend.”

The atmosphere was a little subtle.

Lin Fei kept glancing at me, and several times, she even forgot to eat.

“Why are you looking at her?”

Chen Ji frowned. “Eat more. Don’t be scared. No one can bully you.”

The emotions I’d been holding back for so long finally exploded.

I stared straight at Chen Ji.

“Explain yourself. How did I bully her?”

Chen Ji’s face darkened, but he didn’t say anything.

I turned to Lin Fei and asked, “Are you afraid of me? Did you do something to wrong me?”

Lin Fei shook her head.

“No.”

Shen Luzhou handed me a glass of watermelon juice and said breezily, “If she’s that timid, don’t bring her out to meet people.”

Then he casually grabbed a handful of pistachios. “Peel them gently. Don’t scare her to death.”

Pfft-

A few people around us couldn’t hold it in and burst out laughing.

Lin Fei’s expression turned a little ugly. Under the excuse of going to the restroom, she slipped out.

During the second half of the birthday party, I was both exhausted and sleepy, so I planned to leave early.

Just as Shen Luzhou stepped out to take a phone call, I got up and followed him.

I wanted to thank him.

I’d come all this way, and at my most awkward and helpless moment, he had helped me out of it.

The light outside in the hallway was dim.

Shen Luzhou was on the phone at the end of the corridor.

His cool, clear voice was slightly lowered.

It echoed through the hallway.

Only then did I learn that he was the student council president at their university, and that he had originally had something else to do tonight.

But he’d pushed it back to attend this party.

I stood a few steps away, planning to wait until he finished his call.

Shen Luzhou saw me, and his voice paused. “I’ll call you back later.”

After hanging up, he turned to me. “What’s wrong?”

“Thank you for tonight.”

Shen Luzhou leaned back against the windowsill and quietly stared at me. Just as I started wondering if there was something on my face, he suddenly asked,

“Do you want to go to the amusement park tomorrow?”

“With me?”

“Who else?”

Shen Luzhou looked like he was smiling but not quite. “Didn’t you post on your Moments that you wanted to go to the amusement park? You can’t have come all this way for nothing.”

The wind outside the window stirred his messy black hair, and the hem of his white shirt swayed back and forth.

He looked at me so lazily, yet it made the grievances I’d barely managed to suppress rise back up in my chest.

I abruptly lowered my head and wiped at the corner of my eye. “Thank you. Then I’ll treat you to dinner tomorrow.”

Shen Luzhou was silent for a long while.

Just as I thought he was going to tease me for being a crybaby, he suddenly drawled,

“Sure, girlfriend.”
