Chapter 1
Chapter 1
When I found the basketball court with the cake in my hand, Chen Ji was pinning my best friend, Lin Fei, against the railing and kissing her.
Lin Fei only froze for a split second before she wrapped her arms around Chen Ji in return.
And kissed him back with just as much feeling.
The weather was scorching.
I stood outside the basketball court, light-headed and unsteady after spending the entire night on a train.
All I could feel was the cheering around me, loud enough to pierce my eardrums.
“We were just betting on whether Chen could win Lin Fei over.”
“They’ve been flirting for so long. It was about time they got together.”
“Come on, pay up!”
The moment I heard that, all the strength drained from the hands holding the flowers and cake.
On my phone was the text Lin Fei had just sent me.
“Chen Ji is at the basketball court. Hurry up and confess!”
The sky was overcast.
The wind had picked up too.
Forcing down my embarrassment and disappointment, I ran out of the basketball court as fast as I could.
Behind me came Lin Fei’s anxious voice.
She sounded like she was about to cry.
“Yiyi… it’s not what it looks like…”
“Listen to me. Let me explain.”
I had spent a day and a night on a train. I was exhausted and hurt.
I didn’t have the energy to think about why Lin Fei, on the very day she had urged me to confess, had ended up kissing the person I was supposed to confess to.
But then someone grabbed the hem of my shirt.
Lin Fei’s usually rosy cheeks had gone deathly pale.
In a panic, she pushed Chen Ji toward me, her voice thick with grievance she couldn’t hide. “Yiyi, let Chen Ji date you…”
Chen Ji caught Lin Fei’s hand in his instead and asked coolly, “What are you messing around for? That eager to give your boyfriend away?”
Lin Fei stubbornly held on to me, showing no intention of letting go.
But she didn’t pull her hand out of Chen Ji’s either.
For a moment, the whole scene froze.
When Chen Ji saw the tears in Lin Fei’s eyes, his gaze darkened. Then he turned and snapped at me, “Who told you to come?”
“Can’t you see I’m busy?”
I had spent a day and a night on a train, anxious and sleepless the whole way, only to be met with a cold order to leave.
All the words I wanted to say died in my throat.
I shook off Lin Fei’s hand and was just about to slink away in humiliation when a calm, indifferent voice suddenly sounded beside us.
“I told her to come. Got a problem with that?”
A tall figure appeared not far away.
He lazily lifted his eyelids and looked at me. “You even managed to give the gift to the wrong person. Come here.”
