Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Nine-year-old Xiao Yu hid behind a palace column in the great hall, spying with a blank expression.
The Prince Regent’s gaze turned cold. He wrapped the Young Empress in his cloak and set her on the Dragon Throne-in my lap.
Then he walked up to Xiao Yu, drew the sword from its sheath, and pointed the blade at him.
Xiao Yu clung tightly to the column. “Imperial Uncle.”
The Prince Regent studied him warily.
“Does anyone know you came here?”
The light in Xiao Yu’s eyes went out. He lifted his head and looked toward the highest seat.
“No one. My mother consort died long ago.”
I screamed internally.
“It’s over. He’s going to kill him to silence him. I have to think of something. Think! Think!”
So I shoved the Young Empress off me as hard as I could.
The commotion drew the Prince Regent’s attention.
The Young Empress fell to the floor. Seeing that it was only a child, she lowered her voice and pleaded for him.
“Don’t kill him!”
She beckoned to Xiao Yu.
Xiao Yu seized the chance and ran to the Young Empress’s side.
The Prince Regent sheathed his sword and advanced step by step, his eyes fixed on him.
“What did you come here for?”
Xiao Yu pointed at me and said dazedly, “To look at the chair.”
My feelings were extremely complicated.
“Honestly, he really does love this chair.”
The Prince Regent stared at Xiao Yu for a long while, as if a plan had formed in his mind.
He took the Young Empress’s hand and slowly brought it to his lips. “Didn’t you want a child?”
The Young Empress looked at Xiao Yu hesitantly.
“Kneel down and acknowledge her as your mother. The male lead can’t possibly be that dense, right?”
Xiao Yu pressed his lips together, extended his arms, and bowed with both hands. Then he knelt respectfully on the ground and kowtowed heavily.
“Imperial Mother, may you be well.”
And so, Xiao Yu was raised by the Young Empress.
Prince Regent Xiao Lin accepted him as his disciple and personally kept him by his side to teach him.
Xiao Lin was not actually Xiao Yu’s imperial uncle by blood. It was only that his ancestors had won illustrious military merits and been granted the imperial surname.
He had made a name for himself in his youth and was skilled in both civil and military matters, so teaching Xiao Yu was nothing difficult for him. But with his daring, ambitious, and frighteningly capable nature, I truly worried about what kind of person Xiao Yu would become under his tutelage.
Over the next few years, Xiao Yu grew quieter and quieter, his temperament becoming increasingly calm and reserved.
He still came to look at me at night, but he never climbed up to sit on me. He only sat on the floor and stared at me, never saying a single word.
“Hello? How about we say something? It’s the middle of the night. This is kind of creepy.”
But Xiao Yu couldn’t hear me.
He sat a little closer to me, gently lowered his eyes, and rested his head against my armrest.
“All right. This is a little less creepy.”
