Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Gu Yunzhi’s father was like mine. He had come from some poor, out-of-the-way village.
Through his own hard work, he had built himself up from nothing and made a massive fortune.
Unfortunately, he was not very educated, so people mocked him as a nouveau riche bumpkin, a country tycoon.
Gu Yunzhi’s mother, on the other hand, had been one of the few college students in the village. Back then, in order to be with him, she had fallen out with her entire family.
Later, after Gu Yunzhi’s father made money, he built the Su Family a new house, bought them cars, and even bought them storefronts in the city.
But if the Su Family refused to let him through their door, they refused to let him through their door. During holidays, only Gu Yunzhi’s mother, Su Suqing, went back alone.
That was why, when I was little, I had only met Gu Yunzhi’s mother. I had never met Gu Yunzhi or Gu Yunzhi’s father.
When Gu Yunzhi was in elementary school, his mother died of cancer.
The Su Family blamed it all on Gu Yunzhi’s father. Even though Gu Yunzhi’s father gave the Su Family a great deal of financial compensation, they still treated him like he was dirt.
And the children from Gu Yunzhi’s two uncles’ families all acted high and mighty whenever they saw him, bullying him in every way they could.
This was why Gu Yunzhi had been somewhat insecure and introverted as a child, and why he had never been very willing to interact with his relatives on his mother’s side.
Because every time he came back to visit his maternal grandparents, his grandparents, uncles, and aunts would badmouth his father.
They said his father had simply gotten rich and no longer wanted his wife who had stuck with him through hard times, and that was why his mother had gotten cancer and died.
They also said his father was so rich that he would definitely find Gu Yunzhi a stepmother and have another son, and then Gu Yunzhi would be left with nothing.
What was even more outrageous was that right after Gu Yunzhi’s mother passed away, the Su Family sent one of their relatives to work as a nanny in the Gu Family, saying they were worried about his father raising a child on his own.
Gu Yunzhi’s father figured they were all relatives and knew each other’s backgrounds, so he agreed.
Unexpectedly, that nanny actually climbed into his father’s bed in the middle of the night… After questioning her, they found out Gu Yunzhi’s two uncles had put her up to it.
They said they were afraid his father would find some woman from outside the family, and the Gu Family fortune would end up in an outsider’s hands…
His father truly loved his mother. To prove a point, he had stayed single all these years and never remarried.
He put all his energy into raising his son and doing business.
But after all that turmoil, the psychological damage it left on Gu Yunzhi was enormous.
Fortunately, he was good at school. Around the time of the college entrance exams, he applied early to universities abroad and was accepted. He never took the domestic exam and went overseas instead.
His father was an uneducated country tycoon, and his mother had died early, so the Su Family naturally assumed Gu Yunzhi was a terrible student.
Because he had gone abroad without taking the college entrance exam, those relatives from the Su Family had always believed it was because he could not get into a domestic university, so his father had spent money to send him overseas.
During the years he was away, after the villagers heard the Su Family’s version of things, they all said he was a useless wastrel who had lucked into having a rich bumpkin for a father. They said he could not get into university, so his dad spent several million to send him abroad just to gild his resume.
A returnee? More like a sea turtle, they said.
When they said it, every single one of them acted so pained, as if those millions had come out of their own pockets.
This time, before Gu Yunzhi came back, his father told him to keep a low profile and pretend he did not know anything, to save himself the trouble of explaining.
After Gu Yunzhi finished telling me all this, he looked at me pitifully.
“What about you?”
Of course, I wanted to give this poor little thing a hug.
I said, “Oh, my dad’s reason is much simpler. Twenty years ago, he made money running a chicken farm, and then some jealous person in the village poisoned every single chicken in the whole farm.”
“So he said you should never flaunt your wealth.”
“Right now, I’m just an unemployed young person who graduated from a third-rate university, owes over a hundred thousand on credit cards and online loans, and still doesn’t have a job.”
“Don’t let it slip.”
Gu Yunzhi: “…”

Twenty years ago, my dad got drunk and let it slip to someone that he had made two hundred thousand yuan in a year raising chickens. Before long, every chicken on his farm had been poisoned to...
