Chapter 2

This was the first time I ever saw a god.

He arrived on auspicious clouds, handsome and coldly aloof, his white robes glowing with a faint light.

Legend had it that the Supreme God had cultivated the Path of Ruthlessness for a thousand years and had long since shed all desire and emotion. Yet when he saw the severed limbs and mangled corpses strewn across the ground, his eyes reddened at once, and clear tears fell from them.

A god pitied all living beings.

Thunder rolled furiously across the nine heavens. The Supreme God shouted, his voice sharp with rage, “Silian, why are you so cruel?”

Fairy Si Lan knelt collapsed in the blood and filth, smiling bleakly. “Why? Because of you.”

Her slender body swayed faintly in the fierce wind. “I was only an orphan. You were the one who picked me up and brought me back to White Jade Capital. You taught me magic yourself and gave me, in just a few short years, the cultivation that would take others centuries to achieve.”

“In a thousand years, you had never taken a disciple, nor had you ever put so much care into anyone. That means I was special in your eyes! I don’t want to be your disciple. I want to be your woman. But you were so cold to me, and you even told me to get out!”

“I was miserable. I got drunk and passed out on the road. Old Man Meng picked me up and brought me back. He made me sobering soup and asked me with concern what had happened. I cried and told him my master refused to let me be his wife. But Old Man Meng laughed and said, how could master and disciple be together? That it went against all proper human ethics. Do you know? That old bastard even tried to persuade me to let go.”

“A mere herb farmer dared to meddle in my feelings!”

The Supreme God’s expression grew darker and darker. “And that is why you slaughtered them?”

Silian said stubbornly, “Yes! I wanted to massacre Meng Family Village. I wanted to kill people. Master, I just wanted to see whether you could bear to punish me!”

The sky turned terrifyingly dark. Thunder cracked again and again.

The Supreme God summoned his sword, furious beyond measure. “Silian, for your own selfish desires, you slaughtered innocent commoners. Your crime is unforgivable. You should have your bones crushed and your ashes scattered!”

I sobbed until I could hardly breathe, but my injuries were too severe. I could not move at all.

I looked up at the Supreme God in the sky, my heart filled with reverence and gratitude.

A god truly was fair and selfless. He would give us justice!

Kill her! Hurry and crush this madwoman’s bones and scatter her ashes!

I waited for the Supreme God to bring down punishment. But after a long while, I saw him looking at Fairy Si Lan with a complicated gaze, as if he were seeing another woman through her.

In the end, the Supreme God sighed and flew away on his sword.

I froze. What did the Supreme God mean by that?

Chapter 3

A moment later, the Supreme God returned.

He was standing atop a colossal beast as he slowly descended from the sky.

The beast resembled a tiger, with a pair of wings on its flanks, a huge fanged maw, and fur as sharp as steel needles.

Fairy Si Lan was shocked. She covered her lips with one hand. “Isn’t that Qiongqi, the ancient vicious beast sealed inside the Demon-Suppressing Tower? Master, why did you let it out?”

The Supreme God snapped, “Shut up! Go find somewhere to hide.”

I suddenly remembered the story my grandfather had told me. A thousand years ago, Qiongqi had terrorized the land, so the Supreme God had traveled all the way to the North of Qiongfa, subdued Qiongqi, and sealed it inside the Demon-Suppressing Tower.

The yin fire Qiongqi breathed came from Nine Nether Hell. Artifacts forged with that fire were incredibly powerful.

In other words, Qiongqi had been breathing yin fire to forge swords for White Jade Capital for a full thousand years!

Just then, the Supreme God formed his right hand into the shape of a sword, and one invisible blade of sword energy after another struck Qiongqi’s body.

Qiongqi shrieked in pain and rolled across the ground, then curled up obediently, pressing its head down into the grass.

The Supreme God ordered coldly, “Go. Set the mountain on fire.”

Qiongqi was clearly stunned, but it did not dare disobey. It hurriedly spewed Nine Nether Yin Fire from its mouth.

In an instant, the entire village was engulfed in roaring flames. The houses, the trees, the immortal herbs, and the corpses of the villagers and my grandfather were all swallowed by the pale-blue yin fire.

At that moment, the Supreme God slowly raised his sword and aimed it at Qiongqi. His indifferent expression was exactly like Fairy Si Lan’s when she had tortured me.

The Supreme God’s voice rang with righteous authority. “Impudent beast. You dared to flee the Demon-Suppressing Tower, murder innocents, slaughter a village, and destroy the evidence. For your crimes, you shall be executed!”

Qiongqi quickly realized what was happening and struggled to pounce at the Supreme God.

The Supreme God’s attacks were vicious and ruthless. He shattered Qiongqi’s fangs, severed its wings, blinded both its eyes, and broke all four of its limbs…

Even as Qiongqi let out agonized cries and whimpered as it knelt to beg for mercy, the Supreme God showed no leniency.

I watched the horrifying scene, trembling all over.

This was not a god. This was a demon.

Suddenly, the Supreme God slowly turned his head. “There is still someone alive. Who?”

My heart lurched.

I had been discovered.

I closed my eyes as bloody tears slid down my face, quietly awaiting my fate.
