Chapter 1
Chapter 1
When I woke again, my face was in unbearable agony.
With great difficulty, I raised a hand to touch it. My fingers came away covered in blood.
The pain jolted me fully awake, and the terrifying scene before I fainted came rushing back.
That beautiful Fairy Maiden reeked of wine. She held a sword, its tip aimed at my face. “Old Man Meng said his granddaughter bore a slight resemblance to me. Hah. As if you deserve that.”
Before I could even defend myself, the Fairy Maiden slashed my face open, stabbed me, and stomped my leg bone in two.
Tilting her head, she patted my face with the toe of her shoe and smiled with innocent delight. “I’m going to slaughter the village now. Little girl, I’ll give you a chance to run and warn them.”
I crawled forward with everything I had. My nails split against the hard-packed earth, and my ruined lower body dragged a bloody trail behind me.
But I was still too late.
I watched helplessly as the Fairy Maiden rode her sword into the village. She killed everyone she saw, not even sparing infants still wrapped in swaddling clothes.
All sixty-five people of Meng Family Village were slaughtered to the last in less than the time it took to drink a cup of tea.
The thick stench of blood filled the air. Even the pear blossom tree at the village entrance was dyed red.
I sobbed until no sound came out. In just a few days, it would have been my fifteenth birthday.
Grandfather had stroked my head and said with a smile, “In the next couple of days, the Daoist masters from White Jade Capital will come to inspect the medicinal herbs. Once the reward silver comes in, Grandpa will buy you a floral cloth dress. Then we can start looking for a handsome husband for you.”
But I never got that floral cloth dress. Instead, I saw Grandfather cut in half at the waist by the Fairy Maiden.
Before he died, Grandfather was still shouting with all his might, “Run, girl!”
I didn’t understand. Weren’t women who cultivated immortality supposed to be pure and kind?
Why was she more terrifying than any demon or ghost?
Hatred nearly burst from my chest.
Strictly speaking, the land of Meng Family Village belonged to the immortal sect White Jade Capital. For generations, the villagers had grown immortal herbs for White Jade Capital.
The immortal Daoist masters would surely hack this woman to pieces and give us justice!
I lay motionless in the grass, staring fixedly at that woman.
I thought she would flee after the massacre.
Instead, she formed a sword seal with her fingers and sent her voice across a thousand miles. “Master, I killed people!”
Her body swayed, and tears washed the blood from her face, making her look deranged and shattered. “High God Jiyuan, did you hear me? I killed people!”
My heart lurched.
High God Jiyuan?
The supreme sect master of White Jade Capital?
The only god in this world?
This woman was actually the god’s disciple?!
