Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Gu Zhixian and I walked to the food street.
Even as midnight approached, the street remained brightly lit, filled with a never-ending stream of diners.
I patted my stomach. “I’m hungry. Will you stay and eat with me?”
Gu Zhixian didn’t give a definitive answer.
I pulled him toward a stall and sat down, busying myself with ordering four dishes, a soup, and five pounds of crawfish.
“I don’t have the money to pay for this,” he grunted, glancing at the menu.
“Don’t worry, I specifically prepared the currency used in this era. How could an old lady like me let a little kid like you pick up the tab?”
He bristled at being called a kid and looked at me mockingly. “Didn’t you say you were my future wife? In reality, weren’t you born much later than me?”
Just then, a young girl carrying a fruit basket came by selling fruit and flowers. I pretended not to hear him as I picked out some fruit and a bouquet of blue hydrangeas, handing them to him. “You can’t eat mangoes or lychees; they give you a rash. And hydrangeas are your favorite, right?”
He frowned.
I softened my voice and continued, “Because the hydrangea symbolizes completeness and reunion.”
That was what he had always yearned for.
Gu Zhixian finally lost his composure. “How do you know that?” he asked, his voice urgent.
I gently took his hand as it rested on the table, my voice calm and peaceful. “Your favorite food is shrimp, you hate mutton, and you’re terrified of cilantro-you say it smells like stink bugs. You have an IT mogul you idolize, and your dream is to be just like him and have your own technical team. You’re actually quite a crybaby; when you were little, you used to hide and wipe away tears in secret because you missed your parents. You have a mole on your right buttock and a dark red birthmark on your inner thigh…”
I had seen those last details while nursing him during the final stages of his cancer.
Gu Zhixian covered his face, cutting me off. “…Stop talking!”
I suppressed a smile. “And another thing, you have slight hearing loss in your right ear. That’s because…”
I didn’t finish the sentence.
It was because his father had hit him.
Gu Zhixian breathed heavily, his eyes turning red as he stared at me. “I clearly don’t know you…”
One after another, the dishes were served-all of them his favorites.
Disbelief was written all over Gu Zhixian’s face.
Using the gentlest voice I could muster in this life, I said, “Because I am your future wife.”
