Chapter 4

After recuperating at home for a few days, Du Ruoqing finally realized something was wrong.

At the dining table, she questioned me.

“Why are you the only one I see every day?”

“Because it isn’t the weekend.”

I ladled myself a bowl of soup without lifting my head. “On weekends, you’ll see one more.”

“Where are Mom and Dad?”

She was indignant.

I took a sip of soup and thought for a moment. “Turkey, France, Tokyo, or Paris…”

Half her face darkened. She scolded me for randomly reciting lyrics like a lunatic.

I spread my hands, my expression helpless.

I was telling the truth.

After all, financial magnates spent their lives flying everywhere, and international film queens crossed countries constantly.

But Du Ruoqing could not accept it. She stared hard at me, and then her eyes reddened.

Her aggrieved look was very similar to Little Black when he was young.

When I first picked him up, he had also looked so wounded and pitiful. But once I gave him a toy ball, he happily chased it all over the yard.

It was just that Little Black had played with that toy ball for years. If I brought it over for her…

Little Black would mind, right?

I pressed my lips together and tentatively asked, “How about you hang out with me?”

Du Ruoqing burst into tears on the spot.

Du Ruoqing used some unknown method.

That very night, my parents and brother all came home.

Five family members, two employees, and two dogs filled the living room, and I witnessed the first family meeting of my life.

Du Ruoqing opened the meeting.

“Dad, Mom, I hope I can become your true daughter!”

My parents looked at each other.

“The paternity report is out?” my mother asked, even picking up the calendar to flip through it. “Did time pass that quickly? I feel like I only left home yesterday…”

My cold father frowned and began checking emails on his laptop. “The south-city project still hasn’t been secured after three months? The planning department is full of trash.”

My expressionless brother said, “Three days, eighteen hours, and thirty-seven minutes.”

My father and mother put down the things in their hands and let out a breath at the same time.

Du Ruoqing looked even more aggrieved.

“Dad, what I mean is, I finally came home. I hope to take on the responsibilities a daughter of the Su family should take on, instead of being like her, young but already eating, sleeping, and waiting to die…”

Du Ruoqing pointed at me.

My brother understood. “You want to be the heir?”

His tone was cold. His long, narrow eyes stared at Du Ruoqing, and the insight in them made her lose some nerve.

Du Ruoqing said seriously, “The sons and daughters of the Su family are the same. I only want to share the burden and become a source of pride for Mom and Dad, just like you, Brother.”

“Dad, please believe in me once. I have always taken you as my role model! I am determined to become someone like you! Please give me a chance to prove myself!”

“Pfft.”

I couldn’t hold it in and hurriedly covered my mouth.

“Ahem.”

Wang Ma and Uncle Chen reminded me from behind.

I quickly tucked away the grin I had failed to hide and obediently continued lowering my presence.

Du Ruoqing kept talking about how lonely and isolated she had been all these years, and how urgently she wanted to find a sense of belonging.

She spoke through tears.

My mother was moved.

“Old Su, the child only wants recognition. How about…”

My father was still frowning, his aura very much that of a big boss.

At this moment, my brother spoke.

“I have no objection.”

Hearing my brother say this, my father finally relented.

“Fine. Uncle Chen, arrange courses for her tomorrow.”

Du Ruoqing was ecstatic.

When she looked at me, her face was full of superiority.

I lowered my head and sighed deeply.

Young woman, she had no idea what she was about to face.

On the first day of the course arrangement, Du Ruoqing cried again.

Looking at the books and exercise sets stacked so high that she could not see the top even on tiptoe, her little brain was about to shrink.

Uncle Chen stood to the side, his expression as usual.

“Miss, starting today, I will hire teachers from all industries to provide you with one-on-one tutoring. Everything will follow the young master’s rules. Of course, the young master began studying from childhood, so his progress was certainly faster than yours.”

“But you need not worry. I have already arranged a systematic study plan that will ensure you catch up quickly.”

“Today’s content includes finance, management, market analysis, planning, piano, guzheng, yangqin, German, Arabic, Spanish, astronomy…”

“Wait!”

Du Ruoqing could not listen anymore. Her lips trembled, and her tears looked ready to fall at any second, but she still clung to one last shred of stubbornness.

“Why do I have to study astronomy?”

Uncle Chen said, “Not only that, you must also study housekeeping. The children of the Su family are all well-rounded and outstanding in every area.”

Du Ruoqing said, “But she has so much free time!”

Du Ruoqing pointed at me emotionally.

I, who was holding chips and watching a drama, raised my head in bewilderment. Meeting Du Ruoqing’s reddened eyes, I answered with perfect confidence.

“I’m eating, sleeping, and waiting to die.”

Du Ruoqing’s face turned the color of pork liver.
