Chapter 9

By Ranran’s third day in the hospital, she had already become a favorite among all the doctors and nurses in the department.

They loved to tease her every time they came for rounds.

The little girl was thin-skinned; she would get shy whenever they teased her and try to burrow into my arms.

But she was too polite to just give them the cold shoulder. So, with a flushed face and a milky voice, she would respond to them with utmost seriousness.

She looked absolutely adorable.

We were staying in a four-person ward.

The next day, a young boy named Lu Hao moved into the last empty bed.

The child had the kind of round face that grandparents would find irresistible. His chubby neck and wrists were adorned with several pieces of jewelry-either gold or jade.

His mother was in her early thirties, dressed in flashy clothes and possessing delicate features.

From the moment she walked in, her brow was furrowed. Her narrow eyes cast a disdainful sideways glance at the other three beds.

“Haohao, don’t let your jade pendant hang out.

“Be careful, or someone might steal it.”

The family members accompanying the patients in the other two beds immediately turned red with anger.

“Excuse me, what do you mean by that?”

“Did I say I was talking about you? Being so quick to take offense… you’re not feeling guilty, are you?” She curled her lip.

“Also, why are you calling me ‘Miss’? Can’t you tell I’m married?

“My husband’s surname is Lu. From now on, call me Mrs. Lu, understood?”

After saying that, she tucked Lu Hao’s jewelry back into his collar and walked toward Gu Cong with an air of familiarity.

“Little Gu, your family and our Lu Family are on good terms, and you’re good friends with Lu Feizhi. You really should have arranged a private room for us.

“It’s too noisy here, and there’s all sorts of people around. Who knows what they’re here for?”

She spoke with an overbearing air.

“If Lu Feizhi hadn’t recommended you, I never would have brought Haohao to a hospital where you have to wait half an hour just for the elevator.”

Lu Feizhi…

My fingers stiffened for a moment.

I hadn’t expected them to be members of the Lu Family.

Gu Cong was busy recording the heart rate of the patient in the next bed and didn’t even look up.

“The ones who have business dealings with the Lu Family are my parents, not me.

“Never mind you-even if Lu Feizhi came himself, there wouldn’t be a private room. If you want to use the back door, please transfer to another hospital.

“If you’re not used to staying here, you can also choose to transfer.

“Additionally, if you’re incapable of looking after your valuables, I suggest a transfer as well.”

Mrs. Lu gave a forced laugh and finally fell silent.

Ranran leaned close to my ear and whispered, “Mama, is she talking about Uncle Lu?”

“Yes, but Ranran, can you pretend you don’t know Uncle Lu from now on?”

I had been wondering how to explain it to Ranran, but to my surprise, she nodded in agreement without asking a single question.

Ever since the mother and son moved into bed number two, the ward had become exceptionally noisy.

Quite a few people came to visit them, carrying expensive gifts.

Their conversations revolved entirely around Lu Hao’s powerful and influential father.

Lu Hao was very proud of himself and turned to show off to Ranran.

“Hey, is no one coming to the hospital to see you? How pathetic.”

Ranran was confused. “I have Mama. Isn’t that enough?”

Seeing that his words were falling on deaf ears, he rolled his eyes and ran off to find a sense of superiority in front of the children in the other two beds.

It wasn’t until Gu Cong warned them with a cold face that if they continued to disturb the other patients’ rest, they would all be kicked out, that the stream of visitors finally began to dwindle.

The year I graduated from high school, I rejected Gu Cong’s confession in front of the entire school.

I told him I already had a boyfriend.

He nodded politely and turned to...
