Chapter 7

I met Qin Shuang, the senior colleague Dr. Zhao had mentioned.

She worked in pediatrics and was part of the surgical consultation team for Ranran’s upcoming procedure.

Dr. Qin was exceptional; her medical skills and reputation at the Second Hospital were renowned. She was both beautiful and gentle, always speaking to Ranran in a soft, smiling voice.

After learning she had to undergo another surgery, Ranran became a bit sullen.

“Mommy.”

Ranran tugged at my clothes and leaned in to whisper in my ear.

“Ranran doesn’t want to stay in the hospital.

“Ranran wants to go home.”

A sudden ache flared in my chest, and my nose began to sting.

In the past, Ranran had always been incredibly cooperative, whether it was taking medicine, getting shots, or undergoing surgery. She used to keep a constant eye on her little watch, and the moment it was time for her medication, she would pitter-patter over to find me. I never had to coax her.

That changed last year when her condition flared up. She underwent two surgeries at a hospital in Nancheng and was hospitalized for a long time.

Back then, I was juggling caring for Ranran with working to earn money. I only slept three or four hours a day; no amount of makeup could hide the dark circles under my eyes or the bloodshot veins in them.

After she was discharged, Ranran became reluctant to go to the hospital.

At first, whenever I asked her why, she would just lower her head and refuse to speak.

Then one day, she finally opened up.

“Mommy, you should find a new little kid and be their mommy instead.”

She said, “Being Ranran’s mommy is too hard.

“Ranran doesn’t want to go to the hospital anymore. Ranran just wants Mommy to get some good sleep.”

The year I graduated from high school, I rejected Gu Cong’s confession in front of the entire school.

I told him I already had a boyfriend.

He nodded politely and turned to...
