Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I realized too late what a stupid thing I had done.
Over the years, I had grown accustomed to the unspoken rules of society-the idea that money makes things happen.
But I had forgotten that with the Gu Family’s power and background, if Gu Cong wanted to, a life of decadence and extravagance would be nothing more than ordinary for him.
His life could have been incredibly easy and smooth.
Yet, he went to Germany to study medicine for eight years, dedicating himself heart and soul to the field.
To him, this money of mine… was likely nothing short of an insult.
“I didn’t mean anything by it.”
I forced out a smile.
“Ranran’s condition is difficult to handle. I just… wanted to show my gratitude.”
I tried my best to sugarcoat my intentions.
But when I looked up, I saw my reflection clearly in the display board, along with the expression on my face.
Vulgar, mercenary, and fawning.
It was hideous.
Gu Cong suddenly looked away.
He stared at the medical records for a moment longer.
“I can perform the surgery. And if it’s successful, the child can live a completely normal life.
“But.”
He paused for a beat.
“The success rate is probably less than fifty percent.”
“…Fifty percent.”
I repeated it subconsciously.
I couldn’t tell if I felt more joy or worry at that moment.
My mind was just a chaotic blur of confusion.
“Fifty percent is the highest figure I can give you after considering all factors. Every surgery carries risks, and no one can guarantee the outcome. You need to be mentally prepared for that.”
“I know. Fifty percent… that’s already not low.”
My voice grew softer.
“Before this, the doctors all said… Ranran wouldn’t live past five.”

Eight Years After I Broke His Heart, I Begged Him to Save My Child
The year I graduated from high school, I rejected Gu Cong’s confession in front of the entire school.
I told him I already had a boyfriend.
He nodded politely and turned to...
