Chapter 3

I was momentarily stunned.

“Not really.”

But Dr. Zhao seemed to trust his intuition. “Did you know Dr. Gu before this?”

“…” I had no choice but to admit, “Dr. Gu and I… were indeed high school classmates.”

“I knew it!”

Dr. Zhao immediately pulled me aside to gossip.

“Did Gu Cong ever have a puppy love phase in high school?”

I weighed my words carefully. “I don’t think I ever heard of anything, but I’m not entirely sure about the details.”

“I knew it!” Dr. Zhao slapped his thigh. “When that kid was in Germany, he complained it was too noisy. He couldn’t be bothered to attend any parties; he spent every day either in the dorm or the lab.

“On their first day of school, there happened to be a fashion show on the next street. Someone thought Gu Cong was a male model who had lost his way. They took a few photos and started asking around about him, and he became an overnight sensation at our university.

“Back then, everyone was betting on how long it would take for someone to land him. Who would’ve thought that not only did he stay single through undergrad, but even after finishing his PhD, no girl ever managed to successfully ask him out.

“With a face like that… I mean, seriously, who would’ve thought? It’s a total waste of such a handsome face.”

Gu Cong… did indeed have a face that looked like it belonged to someone very experienced in romance.

His phoenix eyes were far too beautiful, with a sharp brow bone, long outer corners, and thick lashes. When he lifted his gaze to look at someone, there was always a hint of nonchalant indifference.

He looked exactly like the kind of playboy who would toy with someone’s feelings and then act self-righteously impatient about it.

However, I had heard that his deep-rooted family was extremely strict. Combined with the fact that Gu Cong himself had a solid moral compass, he wasn’t one to mess around. In fact… he was unexpectedly… innocent when it came to romance.

At least, the Gu Cong of eight years ago was like that…

“But lately, the iron tree is finally about to bloom!” Dr. Zhao said mysteriously.

“This year, he suddenly gave up a brilliant future to return to China. Supposedly, it’s because of a senior colleague from a neighboring research group.

“That senior is the star pupil of another professor in our college, and her family has been close with Gu Cong’s for generations. Their grandfathers were old comrades-in-arms.

“Tell me, is there anyone in this world more perfectly matched than those two?”

I listened in silence.

“They are indeed a good match.”

Childhood sweethearts, a golden couple, finally finding their way to each other after all this time.

It sounded just like a fairy-tale romance.

“It’s a pity they were both so oblivious before, only caring about their research.

“Until that senior returned to China a few months ago. Gu Cong probably realized he had to hurry and followed her back eagerly. And since she came to the Second Hospital, Gu Cong came to the Second Hospital too. Tell me, if that’s not ‘something going on,’ then what is?”

I nodded in agreement. “It doesn’t sound like a coincidence.”

“Exactly! Gu Cong is just stubborn. See, he’s traveled thousands of miles to chase his wife.

“By the way, if Gu Cong didn’t date in high school, he must have had a girl he liked, right? What’s he like when he’s pursuing someone? Has he ever confessed to a girl before?”

“…”

I lowered my head awkwardly.

“I’m not sure. Dr. Gu and I… weren’t close in high school.”

Dr. Zhao looked a bit disappointed. “Fair enough, with his personality, he really doesn’t have many friends…”

Before he could finish, there were two knocks on the door behind us.

Gu Cong slowly pulled his hand back from the door.

“What are you chatting about?”

“Nothing, nothing!”

Guilty, Dr. Zhao said, “Uh, the director is looking for me. I’ll head out first. Bye! You two take your time chatting.”

The year I graduated from high school, I rejected Gu Cong’s confession in front of the entire school.

I told him I already had a boyfriend.

He nodded politely and turned to...
