Chapter 12
Chapter 12
“Don’t you have enough work to do, Senior?”
Gu Cong’s lips curled into a faint, nonchalant smirk.
“How about I ask the director to schedule a few more night shifts for you?”
“No, no!” Dr. Zhao shook his head like a rattle. “I’m going back to my rounds. See ya!”
He certainly ran off fast after causing such a mess…
The atmosphere turned silent.
Gu Cong waited for a moment.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll be heading out. I have a surgery later.
“Also, Ranran’s surgery is scheduled for next week. We’ll be doing another comprehensive pre-op check and assessment.
“This surgery carries a significant risk. It would be best if you could call Ranran’s biological father here as well.”
Perhaps it was because the past had been brought up, but Gu Cong’s voice carried a hint of a chill.
“The child has been hospitalized for so long, and he hasn’t shown his face even once. What kind of father is he?
“Can such an irresponsible man really take care of a child and a family?”
His tone was quite heavy, and his words were far from polite.
After he left, Ranran asked me in a small voice, “What’s wrong with Uncle Gu?”
I gently pinched her cheek. “Uncle Gu probably… just remembered some bad memories.”
-Terrible memories related to me.
That summer eight years ago, in the empty room behind the Ninth High School auditorium, an eighteen-year-old Gu Cong had once offered his heart to me.
At the time, his eyes were bright as he handed me his college entrance exam results, which had just come out the day before, along with his application form. He asked me which city I planned to go to.
The tips of his ears were slightly flushed as he said that, if possible, he wanted to go with me.
Wherever I went, he would follow.
Just like that, he easily and directly placed his future in my hands and asked if I was willing.
How did I answer him back then?
Oh, right. I said, “I’m sorry, my boyfriend wouldn’t like that.”
In that instant, all the expression froze on Gu Cong’s face. He was stunned for a long time before asking me when it had happened.
It was the first time I had ever seen that look on him.
Cautious, with a hint of hurt.
“Last night,” I said, averting my gaze.
Gu Cong’s eyes turned red. He asked almost subconsciously, “If only I had been a little earlier…”
That short sentence was broken by several pauses.
It was likely the most undignified he had ever been in his life.
“It wouldn’t have mattered,” I interrupted him coldly.
“I’m not sure if you’ve misunderstood something.
“But I don’t want to go to the same city as you, and there is no possibility between us.”
I said,
“Whether in the past or in the future, whether I have a boyfriend or not, I will never be with you.”
There were many ways to reject someone, but I chose the most hurtful one.
To make matters worse, neither of us noticed the microphone someone had carelessly left on the table.
Our conversation was broadcast clearly to every corner of the campus.
In just half an hour, Gu Cong went from being the outstanding graduate representative speaking on stage to the object of everyone’s gossip and mockery.
That recording spread like wildfire through various group chats.
In particular, some boys who had always harbored secret jealousy and resentment toward Gu Cong-but only dared to greet him with smiles because of the Gu Family’s power-took tireless pleasure in bringing it up. They mocked Gu Cong’s taste while imitating my tone.
It was as if Gu Cong’s failure finally allowed them to breathe a sigh of relief.
Later, the recording even made its way onto the internet.
The comments online were even harsher-calling him a ‘simp,’ a ‘homewrecker,’ or ‘delusional.’ Some people attacked me too, calling me cold-blooded and heartless.
Eventually, the Gu Family must have stepped in, as everything finally quieted down.
The twenty-seven-year-old Gu Cong probably hadn’t thought about that foolish past in a long time. Having it suddenly brought up now, it was only natural for him to feel displeased.
As for me, I don’t regret rejecting Gu Cong back then.
I just always felt it was a bit of a pity.
A pity that the person standing there was me.
A pity to have wasted such a rare spark of sincerity and devotion.
But, thankfully, Gu Cong hadn’t lost the ability to love.
I remembered accidentally catching Dr. Qin on the phone with a wedding planner during the lunch break earlier.
Seeing me, she had graciously invited me and Ranran to attend her wedding when the time came.
“We’ve known each other for many years, but for various reasons, we were never together.”
I could tell she was very happy; her eyes were gentle yet resolute.
“After realizing each other’s feelings this year, neither of us wanted to waste any more time.
“We decided to go straight to registering our marriage.”
That’s good. It’s nice when those who love each other end up together.
“Congratulations,”
I said with a smile, offering my blessings.

Eight Years After I Broke His Heart, I Begged Him to Save My Child
The year I graduated from high school, I rejected Gu Cong’s confession in front of the entire school.
I told him I already had a boyfriend.
He nodded politely and turned to...
