Chapter 10
Chapter 10
In the afternoon, Mrs. Lu personally brought a young boy who had just finished school to the hospital.
The boy was exceptionally handsome, tall for his age with a small face. His features had a sharp, refined quality that was the polar opposite of Lu Hao’s round face and blunt features.
Yet, Mrs. Lu claimed he was also her son.
“Hello, uncles and aunties. My name is Lu Ji.”
This boy was much more charming than Lu Hao, greeting everyone in the room one by one as he entered.
Dr. Zhao casually asked him how old he was.
“I’m six. I happen to be exactly one month older than the younger brother my stepmother gave birth to.”
The ward suddenly fell silent.
Having accidentally glimpsed a scandalous secret of the wealthy, even a chatterbox like Dr. Zhao was momentarily too embarrassed to know what to say.
Mrs. Lu, however, seemed not to notice, maintaining a facade of maternal devotion.
“Even though Ah Ji isn’t my biological son, I’ve raised him since he was small. He’s no different from my own.
“As long as the two brothers can grow up safe and healthy, I’ll be satisfied.”
Lu Ji’s face remained a picture of innocent naivety.
“That’s right. Ever since my little brother’s heart got sick, Stepmother has been even better to me.
“She not only lets me eat at the dining table and takes me out every day, but she also frequently invites doctors to the house to give me physical exams.
“Stepmother is so good to me that, naturally, my brother feels like my own flesh and blood.
“Sigh, if I were to accidentally die one day and could donate my heart to my brother, that would be wonderful.”
The smile froze on Mrs. Lu’s face.
Dr. Zhao’s expression also shifted instantly.
“Ma’am,” he said sternly, “regarding this matter, the hospital will be filing a report with the police for the record.
“If anything unfortunate happens to your stepson in the future, you will be the primary suspect.”
“He’s talking nonsense! Don’t believe him!” Mrs. Lu was livid, pointing right at Lu Ji’s nose.
“When did I ever forbid you from eating at the table? It’s clearly you who plays wild outside every day and won’t come home!
“No wonder you’ve been acting so obedient these past few months… Such a heavy, calculating mind at such a young age. No wonder neither of your parents wanted you!”
“He’s only six years old. What could he possibly understand?” Dr. Zhao frowned. “Besides, whether or not you’ve harbored any illegal thoughts, we’ll know once the police investigate.”
Mrs. Lu’s momentum suddenly weakened.
“I was… worried he might be sick like Haohao, so I gave him the checkups,” she stammered.
“Anyway, don’t be fooled by that brat’s act! He’s a monster with a black heart!”
I looked back.
Lu Ji was standing in the corner with an innocent expression, not talking back as he was scolded. His small figure looked incredibly pitiful.
After Mrs. Lu hurriedly left with Lu Hao, he seemed to have been forgotten in the ward.
“Uncles and aunties, I’m sorry for disturbing your rest.”
His tone was dejected, and he looked as if he were about to cry, making Dr. Zhao and the other family members feel immense pity for him.
Ranran had been sleeping all afternoon until she was startled awake by Mrs. Lu’s shouting.
She poked her head out from under the covers, looking curious.
Lu Ji looked over when he heard the movement.
Then, he blinked twice.
He managed to blink away that single tear that had been pooling in his eye for ages without ever falling.
