Chapter 14

I think I fell asleep.

When I woke up again, everything around me was pitch-black, without the slightest sound.

But for some reason, the hairs on my back stood on end, and a deep, overwhelming terror suddenly rose in my chest.

I felt like something in the darkness was watching me.

Like an animal exposed before its natural predator, frantic and uneasy, wanting to scream, wanting to leap up and run.

But I couldn’t make a sound. I couldn’t even move my hands or feet. That fear, born from some sixth sense, nearly suffocated me.

My heart pounded wildly, and goose bumps broke out all over my body.

I forced myself to calm down and tried taking a few deep breaths. At last, little by little, I regained control of my body.

With great difficulty, I opened my eyes and turned my head.

Then I saw a scene I would never forget for as long as I lived.

A snake. An enormous snake, its body covered in translucent gray scales. On every single scale was a strange, eerie human face.

The snake’s head was translucent as well. Inside its skull was a murky liquid that sloshed from side to side like water in a fish tank whenever the head moved.

Two feelers grew from the top of its head, like a snail’s. At the end of each feeler was an eyeball.

Noticing my gaze, both eyeballs swiveled toward me at the same time.

My throat froze over in an instant. I couldn’t make even the faintest sound.

Those two eyeballs revealed a look of satisfaction.

Then the Monstrous Snake opened its mouth wide and slowly swallowed my feet.

First my feet, then my calves, my knees, my thighs.

The two eyeballs on the feelers drew closer and closer, until they were almost poking my face.

My entire body trembled. Tears and snot streamed down my face.

“Help me. Somebody, please save me.

“Dad, save me-

“Qiao Moyu, Lu Lingzhu, where are you? Where did you go?”

I darted my eyes left and right. In the pitch-black pit, I was the only one there. The two sisters had long since vanished without a trace.

I tried to struggle. I wanted to lift my arms and fight back, but my body was still tightly bound with rope. I couldn’t move at all.

And so all I could do was watch helplessly as that snake devoured me, inch by inch.

It had reached my waist.

One of the eyeball feelers pressed against my cheek. I steeled my heart and suddenly twisted my head, biting down on one of the eyeballs.

Even if I die, you’re losing a piece of yourself too. Don’t think you’ll get away unscathed.

My teeth clamped down hard.

With a pop, the eyeball burst in my mouth. Thick, foul, pus-like fluid exploded across my tongue, filling my entire mouth with a sticky, rancid stench. I nearly vomited.

“You don’t like the way I look?”

I sensed an evil intent. Immediately after, one of the faces on its scales began to enlarge and stretch, its surface spreading until it covered the entire snake head.

With a shake of its body, the giant snake transformed into an enormous man, perfectly proportioned.

The man’s eyes were set extremely far apart, and his features were hideous. His mouth was open wide as he devoured my waist.

My heart clenched violently. I was so terrified I nearly passed out.
