Chapter 1

When I opened my eyes again, I had returned to three months earlier-the day I found out I was pregnant.

I sat on the toilet for a long time, clutching the pregnancy test.

A shaft of light streamed in through the small window left slightly ajar, and the two lines on the stick were vivid enough to sting my eyes.

The drip of water in the bathroom struck my heart again and again, dull and painful.

The suffocating agony from my previous life had yet to fade when Jiang Shen’s voice came from outside the door.

“What’s wrong?” His tone was as concise and composed as ever.

Just half an hour ago, I had still been standing at our wedding venue, praying over and over for him to appear.

In my previous life, on this day, he had just come back from the company and brought me my favorite bread.

I had rushed out excitedly, thrown my arms around him, and shown him the pregnancy test.

The expression on Jiang Shen’s face had been complicated. He held it and stared for a long time. “Are you sure?”

The joy in my heart froze. It was as if a basin of cold water had been poured over me. I pulled back my smile and asked cautiously, “You… don’t want it?”

“That’s not it.” He pressed his lips together and looked deeply at me. “We aren’t married yet…”

“Then can we get married now?”

Jiang Shen thought for a moment. “Yes.”

Jiang Shen and I had been together for five years, and in the end, we entered the hall of marriage.

But whenever I thought of how awkward and helpless I had been at that wedding in my previous life, how I had clutched my phone in a wretched state while the crowd pointed and whispered, praying he would show up and rescue me from that predicament, I felt so miserable I could barely breathe.

Back then, before my father married my mother, he had once had another wife.

I didn’t know their past. Nor did I know that from the very first day Jiang Shen met me, he had been planning to push me into the abyss.

When Jiang Shen pushed the door open and came in, my face was deathly pale, and I was curled up in the corner.

In the trash bin lay the pregnancy test I had hidden, wrapped up and concealed.

His tall figure blocked the light. He crouched down in front of me, his handsome brows faintly furrowed.

“Where does it hurt?”

He carried the scent of a long, exhausting journey. I knew he was busy, and sometimes he simply had no time to take care of me.

When we had first gotten together, he had tended to me in every possible way. I could rely on his love and act without restraint.

But at some point, I didn’t know when, he had gradually become the way he was now.

Sharp brows. Alluring, peach-blossom eyes.

But the depths of his eyes were dim, obscure and unreadable. Even when he looked at me gently, it seemed as though he was carrying too much inside them.

Little by little, I had curbed my temper. I no longer willfully demanded that he do things for me.

He loved me. And yet, somehow, that love seemed to have become mixed with something else, some impurity that made me more and more cautious, afraid to touch it.

When he looked at me like this, had he already thought of how, four months later, I would become one piece of his revenge plan?

How I would lie on a cold operating table, enduring the pain?

At four months, the placenta had already formed. The child could only be peeled alive from the mother’s body.

What on earth had my father done to wrong him, for him to take such cruel revenge on me?

Perhaps the memories of my previous life were too unbearable. This time, I did not tell him about the pregnancy.

I buried my head in the crook of my arms. Only after a long time did I say softly, “It’s nothing. I must have eaten something bad. I’ll be fine after lying down for a while.”

Jiang Shen’s hand paused, then slowly settled on top of my head. Gently, he pinched the rim of my ear.

His voice, like his fingertips, held little warmth. “Okay.”
