Chapter 1
I lay sprawled bonelessly across the bed.
Song Jinbie’s sleeveless shirt was draped over my waist.
He was pressed against my chest, an unlit cigarette between his teeth as he chuckled softly.
“It’s been half an hour. Why is your heart still beating so fast? Do you like me that much?”
I endured the ache and slapped his hand away.
“Get lost. I’m serious. I really think I should go get checked at the island clinic.”
A month and a half ago, I woke up on this island.
According to the islanders who found us, Song Jinbie and I had been washed ashore by the sea, our clothes in tatters, our faces drained of blood.
And yet we were holding each other tightly.
My nails had dug into the back of his shoulder, while his hands had left red marks around my waist.
“What a loving young couple. Such a shame they ran into that sea wind, and now they’re both badly hurt and lost their memories. What a sin, what a sin.”
They were right.
When I woke up, Song Jinbie had one leg propped on the bed, the hand resting on it hooked up to an IV drip.
His posture was lazy.
His face was dangerously beautiful, with deep-set brows and eyes that tilted up slightly at the corners.
In an instant, my heart started racing, my scalp went numb, and I struggled to sit up.
“Who are you?!”
Song Jinbie pulled out the IV needle and steadied my swaying body.
“Why are you so eager the moment you see your husband?”
Husband?
Him?
I stared at Song Jinbie in confusion.
His gaze burned into me, his smile deepening.
“Looks like you’ve lost your memory too. Now I believe them when they said we’re married.”
“Because the second I saw you, my heart started beating so fast.”
Since I had amnesia, when I asked myself honestly, I didn’t think I liked Song Jinbie all that much.
But every time I saw him, my heart would speed up, and my entire body would go numb.
“Based on your description, simply put, this is an instinctive physiological response triggered by residual subconscious memory.”
That was how the island doctor explained it.
Song Jinbie waited for me outside the door.
When he saw me come out, he lifted a brow.
“What did the doctor say?”
He wore a loose sleeveless shirt, his shoulders broad and waist narrow, his arms and legs long, his arm muscles just right as he leaned lazily against the wall.
An instinctive physiological response?
I lifted my eyelids and stared brazenly at his collar. “I probably like you on a purely physical level. Simply put, friends with benefits.”
Song Jinbie arched a brow and followed behind me.
“We city people sure had some wild habits.”
Maybe Song Jinbie had worked out for years before all this, because his body was in excellent shape.
He was strong too. Especially tonight.
As if he were taking revenge on me.
When his kiss fell on me, my heart beat even faster.
Without thinking, I raised a hand and slapped him, leaving three finger marks on his pale face.
Song Jinbie caught my wrist.
He laughed under his breath. “I can’t imagine what we were like before. We’ve both lost our memories, and it’s still this exciting.”
I bit his lip, but he took the opportunity to sneak in an attack.
His laughter came out a little breathless.
“You don’t like me? Heh. You react the most when I kiss you.”
I exploded on the spot and started fighting him.
In the end, neither of us backed down, and we both came out battered.
After I wore myself out, I sat at the foot of the bed to rest.
Song Jinbie turned his head to look at the bite mark on the back of his shoulder.
“Other couples fight at the head of the bed and make up at the foot. What does this make us? A pure-hate couple?”
“Get lost.”
I kicked him.
With a loud clang, the rickety iron bed collapsed.
Song Jinbie and I stared at each other.
The granny who had been taking care of us for a while blushed with embarrassment.
“I understand you young folks run hot, but Granny’s bed can’t take that kind of punishment. Your injuries are almost healed anyway. I’ve got a little cottage on the west side. Move over there, do some work for me now and then, and we’ll call it rent.”
“No, Granny, we were just fighting.”
“I understand. Granny’s been young too. Granny understands everything.”
It was rare for Song Jinbie to blush, but that only made the misunderstanding worse.
I personally felt that if I explained my relationship with Song Jinbie out loud, it would pollute the ears of these simple, honest islanders.
So he and I played the young married couple everyone believed us to be.
We did the things married couples did, and fought the kind of fights married couples definitely did not.
After some time, the doctor checked my pulse and said my endocrine system had regulated quite a bit.
Song Jinbie’s injuries and mine were mostly healed too. Only our amnesia showed no signs of improvement.
The island was far from the city, so the doctor suggested we keep recuperating for a while longer.
