Chapter 1
Three years after Sheng Jing and I broke up, he sent me a message.
“Still mad?”
“You’ve sulked long enough, don’t you think?”
“Keep it up and I might not give you another chance.”
I was getting ready to go out for my second wedding anniversary. I stared at his messages, deep in thought.
I hadn’t planned on answering Sheng Jing.
But that day my useless husband, Su Huai, suddenly left for City A and kept me waiting alone at the restaurant for two hours.
Apparently remembering me at last, he sent a brief, cold message. “Sorry. Something’s come up with the business in City A.”
I stared blankly at my phone.
Sheng Jing’s messages kept coming.
“Didn’t you get my message?”
“It’s Sheng Jing. Didn’t you get my messages?”
“Fine. It was my fault. Happy now?”
“…Please. I was wrong.”
Ha. Absolutely no one cared.
Though, come to think of it, this seemed to be the first time Sheng Jing had ever swallowed his pride with me.
I opened my chat with Su Huai again.
Talking to him was like talking to a chatbot. A cold one.
This marriage of convenience was really doing a number on me.
I sent Sheng Jing the restaurant’s location.
He replied instantly. “Ha. What’s this supposed to mean?”
“You’re buying me dinner?”
“Aren’t you eager?”
“I’ll see if I’m free in an hour.”
I replied, “Ten minutes.”
Sheng Jing: “?”
“That’s your attitude?”
“Don’t think I can’t live without you!”
“Answer me!”
Me: “If you’re not coming, I’m leaving.”
Sheng Jing: “…Would twenty minutes work?”
“Fifteen?”
“…Be right there.”
In the eleventh minute, Sheng Jing finally dropped into the seat opposite me, panting.
He hadn’t changed much in three years.
Still polished and arrogant, his features full of that heedless confidence—though a little wariness crept in when he glanced at me.
He wasn’t nearly as talkative as he’d been over text. In fact, we ate in near silence.
Until a member of staff wheeled over the second-anniversary cake I’d ordered.
He looked at the words on the cake: Happy Second Anniversary.
Disbelief filled Sheng Jing’s eyes.
I looked at him without changing my expression.
Waiting for him to realize I was married.
I was about to land a fatal blow.
Call it payback for our breakup.
Instead, he said,
“This place gives every customer a cake for its second anniversary?”
Me: …
It was like spending half an hour explaining something to an idiot, only for him to say, “Huh?”
Fine. I’d spell it out.
I was just about to speak when my phone rang.
It was my best friend, Zhu Heng.
The moment I answered, she started swearing. “That bastard Su Huai! Do you know where he’s gone?”
“He went all the way to City A to see his dream girl on your wedding anniversary!”
“Get over to Leyue Bar right now. I’m getting you eight male hosts!”
“You’re my girl. Nobody gets to treat you like this!”
Worried I wouldn’t believe her, Zhu Heng even sent a picture of Su Huai standing beside his dream girl.
Fuck me. Didn’t they look good together.
As for those male hosts…
I looked at Sheng Jing and told Zhu Heng,
“No need. I’ve got the deluxe version right here.”
