Chapter 3
Chapter 3
I did once have feelings for Xie Yan-before he ruined himself for the sake of his romance with Xu Wan.
Among the circle of people I cultivated favors with, Xie Yan was the one I paid the most attention to.
I focused on him so much, in fact, that it began to cross the boundaries I had set for myself.
There was no other reason than that the Xie Yan of that time was exceptionally brilliant and decisive. He was clever, and he could effortlessly make himself shine.
At the same time, he treated me differently than others. Everyone around us took it for granted that we would eventually become a couple.
Sometimes, I would find myself staring at his silhouette, thinking that such a future wouldn’t be so bad.
But then Xu Wan appeared.
Xie Yan started skipping classes, smoking, and getting into fights, all in the pursuit of ‘freedom.’
As his grades plummeted, his street racing skills improved.
In the end, however, he ended up with a criminal record for underage driving without a license.
“The Xie boy is a lost cause,” my mother commented at the time. I agreed with her in my heart, and just like that, my feelings for him evaporated instantly.
I never invested any real emotion in him again.
Everything proceeded smoothly after that.
With my encouragement, Xie Yan slowly began to pull himself together.
He still had some wits about him, after all, and since he was the Xie Family’s only son, they spent a fortune to bail him out and secure his future.
Finally, by the time he graduated from university, Xie Yan was barely able to demonstrate a modicum of competence.
He officially returned to our circle of second-generation heirs.
Afterward, Xie Yan started his own business, while I went home to begin preparing to take over my family’s enterprise.
When his company just started showing signs of success, Xie Yan proposed to me.
I accepted with a smile.
In a highly dramatic twist, the very next day after the proposal, Xu Wan-the leading lady of his youth-flew back from abroad.
From that moment on, Xie Yan didn’t breathe a word about our families’ engagement.
He kept Xu Wan cautiously by his side. It was as if he was certain that I would be driven mad by love and try to harm his sweetheart, so he did everything in his power to prevent me and Xu Wan from ever meeting.
What he didn’t know was that the day after he hired Xu Wan as his personal secretary, I found a confidant of my own.
Someone more considerate, gentler, and with more potential than Xie Yan.
Most importantly, he didn’t come from a background as prestigious as Xie Yan’s, and he knew how to be grateful. He would never be able to cross me.
