Chapter 3
A staff member had called me away to confirm the rest of the program.
My sister and Jiang Xubai were about to have the opening dance, and I was supposed to lead her out.
At that moment, I was waiting outside the dressing room.
A group of young heiresses emerged together, laughing and teasing each other.
“Qingtian, I’m so jealous. You have two gorgeous brothers like Jiang Xubai and Jiang Muye, and they both spoil you rotten.”
“Exactly. Even after Xia Zhixing marries into the family, she won’t compare to you.”
The girl in the middle, Jiang Qingtian, covered her lips with a little laugh.
“Don’t say that. Once she marries in, she’ll be my sister-in-law.”
“My brothers have spoiled me since we were little. They even asked me first if I wanted today’s opening dance.”
“They’re so good to me. How could I make things difficult for my sister-in-law?”
The others immediately chimed in.
“Exactly, exactly. If you weren’t the Jiang family’s adopted daughter, Xia Zhixing wouldn’t stand a chance of becoming the lady of the house.”
“I still remember Jiang Xubai and Jiang Muye getting into that huge fight with the thugs from outside school over you.”
Jiang Qingtian hurried to stop them. “Oh, don’t talk nonsense. If someone hears, they’ll start spreading rumors again.”
My heart skipped a beat.
This was outrageous!
Were Jiang Xubai and Jiang Muye both scumbags?
How could my very own big sister marry into a family like that?
No wonder Jiang Muye was so eager. He probably wanted to get me under his thumb, then use me to control the entire Xia family.
Hah. What a poisonous little scheme.
He’d seriously underestimated a born-and-bred servant’s loyalty to his sister.
Planning to screw my sister over, were they? Fine. I’d make him my obedient little dog.
My phone vibrated several times. Messages from Jiang Muye.
“Hehe, where did you go?
“Oh, I see you. Baby looks so handsome today.
“I’m here to win you over. Can I ask you for a dance later?”
Haha…
I looked up and met Jiang Muye’s eyes.
He smiled, his ears flushed red. Quite handsome, actually.
But that wasn’t going to fool me anymore.
I looked away without expression.
I didn’t see his smile instantly droop.
I told myself this wasn’t the moment to make a scene.
There were so many people here, and reporters too. I couldn’t let my sister become a laughingstock.
Once I got something on Jiang Xubai, I’d settle the score with both brothers!
Suppressing the urge to beat Jiang Xubai up, I offered him my sister’s hand.
He smiled as he took it. “Thanks for all your help, Jingcheng.”
He tugged. Her hand didn’t move.
He looked at me. I glared back.
Confused, he tried another cautious tug.
I still wouldn’t let go. I just kept trying to flay him alive with my eyes.
Suddenly, pain shot through my waist. “Ow!”
Dad had appeared behind me at some point. He twisted the flesh at my waist hard, smiling through gritted teeth.
“You little bastard. Don’t you dare cause trouble.”
Then he dragged me away.
I sat on a couch drinking in a sulk, convinced I had a terrible life.
Jiang Muye sidled up and asked very softly, “Why didn’t you reply to my messages, baby?”
I glared at him, deadpan. “Forgot.”
His ears reddened again, and his voice went softer.
“Oh, okay. My fault. I should have reminded you again.”
