Chapter 4
Chapter 4
The apartment really was in an excellent location. It would take fifteen minutes at most to walk to campus.
When we reached the door and I saw it had a keypad lock, I deliberately turned my back while Fan Ye entered the passcode.
Fan Cheng turned around with me.
Confused, I asked, “What are you doing?”
She curled her lip and said in a strangely sarcastic tone, “My own brother has never been willing to let me know his passcode! His own sister, you know? Tell me, what if something happens to him at home one day? I wouldn’t even be able to get in to collect his body!”
The second she finished speaking, Fan Ye grabbed her by the back of the neck. The girl instantly chickened out. “But! My brother is in such great health, nothing would ever happen to him, so I should respect his privacy, right?”
In my previous life, Fan Cheng and I had only been ordinary classmates. We hadn’t been close, so I truly hadn’t known she had such a clownish personality.
Fan Ye smiled at her words, let go, then jerked his chin toward the inside of the apartment and said to me, “Go on in, Little Raindrop.”
“?”
“Pfft!” Fan Cheng was the first to burst out laughing. “Bro, why are you giving people nicknames like some elementary school kid?”
Under Fan Ye’s oppressive glare, Fan Cheng quickly ran a few meters ahead and kept teasing him. “And it’s such an old-fashioned one too, hahaha! Little Raindrop? What even is that? Hahahahahaha!”
“Fan Cheng, do you believe I’ll throw you out right now?”
“Okay, okay.” Fan Cheng mimed zipping her mouth shut. “I won’t say anything, I won’t say anything, hahahaha.”
At first, being called that had made me a little embarrassed, but after Fan Cheng interrupted like that, I felt much better.
I looked around. It was a standard one-bedroom apartment with a living room, and the layout was quite nice.
It was just that the overall style inside was a little cold and hard. Aside from various shades of gray, the decor was pure black.
Seeing my gaze drift back and forth between the sofa and the floor-length curtains, Fan Ye asked, “You don’t like it?”
I quickly waved my hands. “No, no. It’s great!”
With the incredibly reasonable rent he’d offered on the way here, how could I possibly have anything to be dissatisfied about?
Fan Ye was silent for a few seconds, then asked, “When are you moving in? I’ll come pick you up.”
“No need.” I thought for a moment. “I still have some things to deal with at school over the next couple of days. I should be able to move in around the weekend. I’ll just call a car myself then.”
He didn’t respond further. Instead, he pulled up his WeChat QR code and thrust it in front of me. “Okay. We’ll sign the contract after you move in.”
“Let’s sign it now.”
“Huh?” Fan Ye froze.
“Is now inconvenient?”
“No… Then you’ll have to wait for me a bit.” He glanced at his watch. “About ten minutes. Is that okay?”
I nodded.
Fan Ye strode out quickly, then came back in two seconds later and dragged Fan Cheng away with him.
Left alone, I was a little bored. But since I hadn’t moved in yet, it didn’t feel right to wander through every corner, so I went out onto the balcony.
Leaning on the railing, I watched the people coming and going below the apartment complex, and for a moment, I felt like crying.
It was wonderful. I could live one more time.
It was wonderful. I had been reborn at a point when everything could still be fixed.
Just as my eyes gradually grew damp, a figure sprinting at top speed flashed through my line of sight and disappeared into the building entrance.
A short while later, Fan Ye appeared in front of me, panting for breath.
He waved the papers in his hand and broke into a smile. “Done! Let’s sign.”
I was stunned for two seconds. This landlord seemed… a little too enthusiastic.
Once the move-in date was signed in black and white, I transferred the deposit to Fan Ye.
Only then did my heart finally settle.
At last, I had taken the first step toward leaving Qi Zheng.

Qi Zheng raised a hand and knocked over the insulated food jar I was offering him.
