Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Under my protection, Xue Ke had successfully found a job.
And no one dared bully this poor boy anymore-the one with no parents, and a heart that was a little too honest and kind for his own good.
He was nineteen this year. When he was eighteen, he had gotten into a decent school, but he couldn’t afford the tuition.
So he came to the city looking for work, thinking there would be more opportunities in a big city. He just hadn’t expected to get scammed the moment he walked out of the train station.
Fortunately, though things had gotten off to a rocky start, they were going fairly well now.
He got his new documents in order, wore the clothes I bought him, and went to work every day brimming with motivation.
Whenever he came back, he was always carrying several big bags of groceries.
He thought I was too thin. Every time he held my slender wrist, he seemed at a loss as to where to put his strength, deep worry surfacing on that sharply defined face of his.
To be fair, my build was not exactly petite.
In fact, so I could someday knock Zhou Xu and Lin Tiantian, that shameless pair, flat with one punch, I had even taken up boxing.
Unfortunately, Xue Ke was simply too tall and too broadly built.
Back when he worked part-time while studying, he had always done manual labor.
As a result, he ate far more than ordinary people.
So after his bag was stolen, he also got hungry much faster than most.
And now, once he could finally eat his fill, there was always a faint, happy smile on his face.
However, compared with his tall stature, he was actually somewhat socially anxious. He was also rather sensitive. If I spoke to him a little more than usual, he would look bashful.
According to feedback from his coworkers, Xue Ke didn’t really communicate with others at work.
But no one thought he was hard to get along with.
Because he spent the entire day working. Whether it was his own tasks or someone else’s, if they handed it to him, he did it.
Unsurprisingly, Xue Ke was friendly, sincere, and bright and sunny at heart.
Completely different from me.
The current me was a little too dark. What I thought about most every day was how to torment my cheating, fickle husband and his little mistress.
Back then, I had been afraid Xue Ke would die on my doorstep and missed my chance to go to the hospital to gloat in front of Zhou Xu.
But that did not mean I had given up on tormenting Zhou Xu.
Nor did it mean I had given up on the man who had been my childhood sweetheart for twenty-seven years-the man who had once spent the whole of his blazing youth pursuing me and protecting me, only to grow tired of me soon after marriage and turn around to fall in love with a young girl who looked somewhat like me.

The day my childhood sweetheart and I had our worst fight,
he slapped me for the sake of the young woman he loved.
And I, in a fit of rage, broke three of his ribs.
He screamed...
