Chapter 4

Walking down the street, I looked at my outfit.

My roommate had lent me her prettiest dress. Even the foundation I was wearing was a brand-new bottle she’d been too stingy to use on herself.

Because of that idiot Zhou Xingzhi, it was all for nothing. Now, I even had to catch the bus back to school.

The more I thought about it, the more I regretted it. I should have at least made Zhou Xingzhi reimburse me for a taxi. How annoying.

As I waited at the bus stop, a black car suddenly pulled up, and the window rolled down.

In the driver’s seat was Zhou Yanzhi. His hair was a shock of yellow, and his smile was as bright as ever.

“Sister, why are you so beautiful today? Want to hop in? How about I treat you to dinner?”

Zhou Yanzhi was nothing like his brother.

He watched me clumsily cutting my steak without showing any sign of judgment. Instead, he naturally finished cutting his own and swapped plates with me.

He wasn’t like Zhou Xingzhi, who had burst out laughing at my lack of grace.

Zhou Xingzhi had even posted to his Moments: “Incredible. First time seeing one of those people you hear about online who orders their steak ‘eight-tenths’ done.”

Then, he had asked me in a mocking tone if he should get me a pair of chopsticks.

At that moment, I wanted to slap the steak right onto his face.

But when Zhou Xingzhi laughed, he looked too much like him-even the arch of his eyebrows was identical to Wei Qiao’s.

Back then, Wei Qiao and I had sold a haul of scavenged plastic bottles for 70 yuan. It was just enough to buy a steak set for 69 yuan.

Wei Qiao had frowned as he struggled to cut the meat for a long time before losing his patience. He shouted for the waiter to bring us two pairs of chopsticks.

“This is steak? It’s so expensive, yet they give you so little meat,” Wei Qiao had grumbled. I nodded in agreement.

I ended up eating most of that steak; Wei Qiao only finished the complimentary salad.

It had always been like that since we were kids-Wei Qiao was always gruff, but he would always give me whatever he thought was good.

So, seeing a smile so similar to Wei Qiao’s, I had dazed out. I didn’t care about Zhou Xingzhi’s malicious teasing at all; I only looked at him tenderly and said, “Anything is fine.”

That post on his Moments spread throughout the entire school. Even my roommates found out.

They came running to ask if Zhou Xingzhi was bullying me, urging me to break up with him.

I had rested my chin on my hand and sighed. “But I can’t bear to let go of that face.”

My roommates, who had been swearing and cursing on my behalf, fell silent. They scrolled through Zhou Xingzhi’s Moments again and scratched their heads after a long pause.

“He is definitely handsome, but Xiao Yuan, we can’t be recycling human trash like this. You can’t let love blind you.”

Now, watching Zhou Yanzhi lower his head to gently cut my steak for me, I couldn’t help but space out again.

Zhou Xingzhi’s temperament was like Wei Qiao’s-rebellious, high-spirited, and ready to fight at the slightest provocation.

But the gentleness and consideration his younger brother was showing now… it felt more like the way the Wei Qiao I knew used to treat me.

Zhou Yanzhi noticed my gaze and intentionally or unintentionally showed off his newly dyed hair.

“I dyed it specifically. Well? Don’t I look even more like him than my brother does?”

Zhou Yanzhi leaned closer to me. His eyes held an aggression that didn’t match his ‘puppy-dog’ exterior.

His voice was low, as if he were coaxing me. “Sister, choose me. I promise I’ll love you more than my brother does.”

As if bewitched by those eyes, I involuntarily allowed him to get closer.

Just a second before Zhou Yanzhi’s lips could touch mine, my phone suddenly rang. The piercing ringtone snapped me back to my senses.

I pulled away, avoiding his approach. A flash of disappointment crossed Zhou Yanzhi’s eyes.

The contact displayed on the screen was Zhou Xingzhi. I answered the call, only to hear his explosive voice.

“Lin Yuan, where the hell are you right now?”
