Chapter 127
Chapter 127
At the man’s shout, another gaunt servant hurried through the curtain of rain.
His back hunched, he stumbled inside without a thought for the rain soaking him from head to toe, then respectfully accepted the hat his master handed over with both hands.
“It’s already been parked, Second Master!”
The man addressed as Second Master backhanded him across the face. “Dawdling like that-don’t you know how to move faster? Hurry up and arrange a place for me to stay.”
“Yes, yes, of course.”
The servant wiped the rain from his face, glanced around the room, and finally fixed his gaze on Thirteen before giving him a respectful bow.
“Young brother, please trouble yourself to arrange an upper room.”
Thirteen glanced at Second Master and said coldly, “There are no upper rooms left.”
“What?!” As expected, Second Master flew into a rage. “An inn this big, and you don’t have any upper rooms?”
Despite all his shouting, Thirteen’s expression did not change. “We don’t.”
Second Master’s thick brows shot up. He strode over to Thirteen, grabbed him by the front of his clothes, and nearly lifted him off the ground.
Just then, however, someone beside them barked, “Stop.”
The others had been watching the “show” for quite some time, but Vice Minister Yu was the first who could no longer hold himself back.
He had already begun cracking his knuckles in private. “No wonder they say bullies are infuriating. Today, This Young Master has truly broadened his horizons!”
Hearing this, Second Master immediately shot him a sidelong glance and cursed, “Pretty boy, mind your own business, you-”
Before he could finish, that “pretty boy” closed the distance in a flash. Before Second Master could even see his movements clearly, several spots on his body were struck with sharp pain, and his legs went weak. He dropped to his knees right in front of the other man.
“…”
Yu Lang looked down at Second Master. “This is our first meeting. Why such a grand salute?”
Second Master’s face flushed crimson. He tried to get up, but the other man pressed one hand down on his shoulder, and for a moment, he could not move at all.
Had he run into an expert?
Seeing his master restrained, the servant beside him came straight over, knelt in front of Yu Lang, and kowtowed again and again.
“Young Master, my Second Master has a poor temper. If he offended you, it was absolutely unintentional! You are magnanimous, Young Master. Please spare my Second Master this once…”
Hearing the servant’s words, Yu Lang could not help frowning. “That Second Grandson or whatever of yours does nothing but beat and curse you, and you’re still pleading for him?”
The servant did not dare lift his head. He only said, “Young Master, what are you saying? This lowly one is Second Master’s slave. Let alone a beating or a few curses, even if Second Master wanted this lowly one’s life, this lowly one would have no complaints.”
“Ridiculous.”
Yu Lang had nothing to say to that servant. Instead, he warned Second Master, “If you hit your own servant, This Young Master has nothing to say. But this inn worker did nothing to provoke you. If you dare lay hands on someone again, don’t blame me for being impolite!”
Though Second Master was unconvinced in his heart, he did not dare take advantage with his mouth. He only shouted, “Let go of me this instant!”
Yu Lang released him and stepped aside.
Having lost face in front of everyone, Second Master turned and vented all his anger on the servant, immediately kicking him hard twice.
The servant took both kicks head-on, yet still forced a smile. “Second Master, please calm down…”
“Calm down? Just looking at you makes me angry!”
As he spoke, he moved to kick him again. But he had only just lifted his foot when he somehow tripped over himself and fell flat on the ground, landing face-first in a most undignified sprawl.
This made Yu Lang and Yan Zhengchu burst out laughing despite themselves.
Ren Fengjue, however, instinctively glanced at Xia Ximo.
He saw her standing quietly in the corner, her expression icy, as if none of this had anything to do with her.
What no one noticed was that the fingers hidden beneath her sleeve were quietly gathering strength.
Second Master “unexpectedly” tripped himself and sprawled onto the floor in an utterly sorry state.
It only made the anger in his heart burn hotter.
After he got up, he tried to do it again, only to fall the same way a second time.
He was a large man, and after two falls like that, he actually grew dizzy and saw stars. At last, he had no choice but to stop.
“Get me a room! Now!”
“Yes, yes, of course.”
The servant had no choice but to go back over to Thirteen. Following the prices listed on the room-rate board, he handed over a string of cash. “Sorry to trouble you, little brother. Please arrange a mid-tier guest room for us.”
After the silver ingot from earlier, how could Thirteen possibly care about this mere string of cash? He accepted it with reluctance, but asked, “There are two of you. Are you only taking one room?”
Before Second Master could speak, the servant immediately agreed. “The room is for Second Master. I can stand guard outside the door.”
“…”
Thirteen gave a cold snort and headed up the stairs, repeating the inn’s rules as he went.
“There is no hot water in the inn, no food, and no one will come whenever you call…”
Hearing this, Second Master was naturally displeased again.
“What kind of lousy inn is this? You don’t even have hot water or food?”
Thirteen cast him a chilly look and continued, “There is one superior room in this inn where people often die. Because of that, we don’t get many guests, and I’m the only worker here. I can’t keep up.”
When Second Master heard this, his arrogance inexplicably faded.
On second thought, the inn really was rather cold and frightening. And ever since he had stepped inside, he had been terribly unlucky.
Could it be because of the dead people?
Thinking this, he could not help feeling uneasy.
Just then, as if on cue, a muffled peal of thunder exploded across the sky, and rain immediately began pouring down in torrents.
When Second Master looked at this gloomy inn again, his scalp prickled even more.
Thirteen, walking ahead, seemed to see through his thoughts. He immediately stopped and mocked him. “What? Scared? Don’t dare stay anymore?”
Hearing the contempt in his tone, Second Master immediately forced himself to say, “Second Master Liao fears neither heaven nor earth. Afraid of ghosts? Hmph!”
Thirteen gave another cold laugh and led master and servant past the superior Earth-Class Room, then down a corridor before pushing open a door.
“This is the one.”
The servant went in first to light the lamp. When Second Master Liao saw the state of the room, he was dissatisfied in every possible way.
But the rain outside showed no sign of letting up. The master and servant had already wandered around the town for a long time before finding this inn.
So even if people really had died here, he had no other choice.
“Forget it, forget it. We’ll make do!”
“What a rotten place. You should close down as soon as possible!”
“What are you still standing there for? Find me some clothes!”
Thirteen listened to Second Master grumble and curse, a strange look flashing through his eyes. In the end, however, he said nothing and turned to leave.
When he reached the door of the Earth-Class Room, he picked up the chain from the floor in passing and locked the door again. Only then did he slowly go downstairs.
Everyone downstairs was still waiting for him.
Thirteen walked over on his own and said coldly, “If you have anything else to ask, ask it all now.”
Ren Fengjue did not waste words. He said directly, “I want to know exactly what happened to the first person who died in this inn half a year ago. Think carefully.”
This time, Thirteen finally stopped being stubborn.
The corners of his lips lifted. His voice was icy and laced with mockery as he said, “It wasn’t one person who died back then.”
“What?”
“It was nine.”
