Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I had actually been terrified for a long time.
I watched her cautiously after I told her she was dying.
She just smiled and asked me, “Sister Zhu Yuan, are you really entrusting such an important mission to me?”
I nodded.
I had racked my brain for a long time to come up with the term “Time-Space Courier.”
“As expected of Sister Zhu Yuan. My job title sounds so cool, doesn’t it? Sister Gudong, don’t be jealous. I’m only being entrusted with this heavy responsibility because I’m dying.”
I didn’t want to lie to her.
But there was such a light in her eyes.
“But what do I need to do?”
“You see, everyone eventually walks toward death. Those who die are remembered by those who live. That creates a connection. In other words, those living people want you to bring some words to their departed loved ones.
“So, you are a Time-Space Courier. Your mission is truly arduous because there are just so many people being missed.”
She looked a bit confused.
“But when a person dies, they become a corpse, right? Do people miss corpses?”
I froze for a moment, then thought about it. “Not a corpse, but the departed. So there’s nothing to be afraid of. There will be many, many people who miss those they have lost.”
“Sister Gudong, then whose ‘departed one’ am I?”
“I know! My mom and dad said they’d come find me in a few days. After I die, I’ll be their departed loved one, right?”
My foster mother burned her arm while boiling wontons.
She grumbled and cursed, “If you were more successful, why would I have to work two jobs?”
Then she started nagging again. “If you hadn’t injured that person back then, we wouldn’t be without a single cent in savings.”
I listened to her repeat these things without saying a word.
Only after her anger subsided did I speak up. “Should I go to the hospital in your place tomorrow?”
“Cleaning starts at five. Do you even know what to sweep? If you break something, how could I ever afford to pay for it?”
“Then I’ll go with you. I can help out with whatever is needed.”
“Don’t you have to work?” She winced in pain, her tone clearly sharp.
“I’m on the night shift.”
“You… you changed jobs?”
I nodded. “The previous company wasn’t doing well, and they couldn’t even pay out salaries…”
“Useless.”
She pointed toward the kitchen. “Go make me a bowl of wontons.”
I obeyed submissively.
When I brought the bowl to her, she slapped the table. “Forget it, I don’t want to eat. You eat it. We can’t let it go to waste.”
I ate the wontons in silence, but then I suddenly heard her ask, “I heard from my colleague that you’ve been running to the hospital a lot lately?”
I felt a bit nervous. “I…”
She stopped me from continuing. “That child is quite pitiful. Bring a bowl of wontons to her next time.”
I suddenly smiled. “Okay. I’ll bring some over in a bit.”
However, when I arrived at the hospital carrying the wontons, my world came crashing down.
The little grandson from the neighboring bed was there.
As soon as I entered the room, I heard his mocking voice:
“What ‘Zhu Yuan’? She’s already dead, okay?
“Hahaha, this is hilarious! What ‘Time-Space Courier’? There’s no such thing, okay?”
He was laughing so maliciously.
Xiaomai’s eyes were red, and her body was trembling. “I’m not lying.”
I rushed in. “What are you doing? She’s someone who received a gift personally sent by Zhu Yuan. Zhu Yuan even posted a video about it.”
“Impossible! Zhu Yuan is dead!”
The urge to hit someone began to stir within me again.
The boy’s grandfather wasn’t in the ward, and he continued jumping around provocatively. “She’s dead! She’s dead! You’ve been tricked!”
I couldn’t help but clench my fists. “If you keep talking nonsense, I’ll beat you up.”
The child wasn’t scared at all. “Who are you? If you hit me, I’ll tell my grandpa.”
But the patients on this floor were all cancer patients.
No matter how bad he was, I couldn’t bring myself to tell him that his grandfather was also dying.
I put on a dark expression to scare him. “I’m her older sister. She’s only in here because she didn’t listen and I beat her up. Look, her leg is broken and she can’t even get out of bed now; she has to listen to me. Do you want to try?”
Just then, the Nurse Jiejie came in. “What’s all this noise?”
The little boy burst into tears. “She wants to hit me!”
I denied it. “What are you talking about? You were the one being mean. I was almost moved to tears by your insults.”
“I wasn’t being mean! She’s a liar! She insists that Zhu Yuan made her a Time-Space Courier!”
When the Nurse Jiejie heard this, she said something that shocked me.
“We all know about Sister Zhu Yuan making Xiaomai a Time-Space Courier. And Sister Zhu Yuan even gave her a gift as a reward.
“It was only after we left comments for Sister Zhu Yuan that she saw it.”
That was wonderful.
It turned out I wasn’t fighting this battle alone.
I didn’t even feel embarrassed about lying so boldly.
“You’re lying! You’re all liars! She’s dead!” the boy was still screaming.
I felt my heart go cold.
The nurse pulled out her phone and showed the comment she had left back then.
She handed it to him. “See for yourself.”
Following the Nurse Jiejie’s comment…
There was suddenly a new private message reply:
[Then you have to work hard. It’s a promise.]

Time-Space Courier
The celebrity Zhu Yuan is dead. I still hate her. She always made me feel as wretched and hidden as a rat scurrying across the street.
And yet, I found her third gift. It was a plain music...
