Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Pei Yan’s body could not be kept for long.
I personally stitched his wounds, cleaned his face, and changed him into clean white robes. Xiao Huairen stood to the side, not lifting a finger to stop me.
I grasped Pei Yan’s hand and activated the Eyes of Remembrance once more.
This time, I did not run.
The sound of rain crashed down like a deluge.
Pei Yan was kneeling in the mud, his hands clawing at the rim of a well in an abandoned garden. He was covered in blood, and his left leg looked as though it had been snapped. A woman crouched before him, a Jade Bracelet adorning her wrist.
Pei Yan could not see her face clearly.
Or rather, he did not dare to look.
The woman spoke softly, “Brother Pei, you’ve searched for me for three years. Why aren’t you happy to see me?”
Pei Yan’s voice was hoarse. “You are not her.”
The woman laughed. “The face is hers, the voice is hers, and even the Jade Bracelet her mother gave her is on my hand. What right do you have to say I’m not her?”
Pei Yan spat out a mouthful of blood. “Ah Heng would never look at someone that way.”
The woman’s hand clamped around his throat.
She leaned in close, and Pei Yan finally saw that face clearly.
It was Jiang Heng’s face.
My face.
Not the face of Su Wanzhao that I saw in the bronze mirror now.
A chill ran through my entire body, leaving me barely able to stand.
So the “me” that Pei Yan saw before he died wasn’t the current me.
It was Jiang Heng.
It was my original body.
That body was still alive.
And the person living inside it was the real Su Wanzhao.
The remembrance continued.
Pei Yan was being strangled until his vision went dark. Using the last of his strength, he bit the tip of his tongue and swallowed the wax-sealed pill. By the time the woman noticed, it was already too late.
She sneered. “You want her not to trust me? It’s useless. What she fears most is that she has truly become me.”
Pei Yan stared at the Jade Bracelet on her wrist as tears mingled with the rain sliding down his face.
The last thing he saw was the woman leaning down to whisper in his ear, “The dead don’t lie, but the living can make the dead tell only half the truth.”
The vision went completely black.
I let go of Pei Yan, my tears falling onto his cold knuckles.
Xiao Huairen did not ask what I had seen.
He simply handed me a handkerchief.
I didn’t take it.
“Pei Yan found Jiang Heng,” I said. “But inside Jiang Heng’s body is Su Wanzhao.”
Xiao Huairen’s brow furrowed deeply. “The true culprit is still alive?”
“Alive.” I looked at the sky outside the Funeral Parlor. “And she’s still wearing my Jade Bracelet.”
