Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Legend had it that those with a pure Snow Soul could rapidly absorb the spiritual energy of heaven and earth, causing their aging process to become incredibly slow.
I never expected that such a person truly existed.
I couldn’t help but ask, “Since Xing Luan is your soul spirit, why did you let me keep it?”
Lan Yi’s lips curved slightly. “Le Yan once said that his sister is playful by nature and full of strange ideas. He feared that once she was free from the constraints of her status as a princess, she might flee the Northern Frontier at any moment, so he hoped I would keep a close eye on her.”
“Although a soul spirit recognizes its master, I am mentally connected to it. As long as it is with you, I can sense your location.”
I lowered my eyes and stroked the feathers on Xing Luan’s head. It felt slightly cool to the touch, and the bird let out a soft, submissive cry.
I whispered, “It would have been better if you had come sooner.”
Lan Yi’s arm tightened around me, his voice trembling slightly. “The Princess has suffered.”
He steadied me with one hand while the fingertips of his other hand, carrying a faint trace of spiritual energy, brushed across the back of my neck, my shoulders, and the back of my knees.
A steady stream of spiritual power flowed into me like warm spring water, dispelling the lingering cold stings in my wounds.
He explained softly, “The wasteland where the Soul Devourer Clan resides is dry and the moisture in the air is thin. My connection with Xing Luan was greatly weakened, which is why it took me so long to sense you.”
On the way back to Winterfall City, Lan Yi told me about the secret origins of the Soul Devourer Clan.
Long ago, the Ice Clan of the Northern Frontier and the Human Race of the Southern Frontier had not yet become enemies and lived together in harmony.
One year, a severe drought hit the Southern Frontier, leading to a terrible famine. The human monarch heard that the people of the Northern Frontier could control water, so he sent envoys north to Winterfall City to seek aid.
At that time, the King of the Northern Frontier was a man of benevolence and righteousness, so he sent a priestess south to provide disaster relief.
The priestess exhausted her spiritual power to gather the clouds and call forth a great rain, resolving the Human Race’s urgent crisis.
However, seeing the priestess’s peerless beauty and desiring to master the Ice Clan’s extraordinary abilities, the human monarch actually imprisoned her in his harem.
On a night of torrential rain, the priestess transformed the falling rain into arrows and fought her way out of the encirclement alone.
Yet, as she passed through the Scorched Wild Plains, her pursuers caught up. They used man-made arrows against her, and she met her end in the wilderness.
The Human Race did not give up there.
Lusting for control over the weather, they abducted several Ice Clan girls from the Northern Frontier and took them to the Scorched Wild Plains.
They forced them to mate with human men, producing the first generation of the Soul Devourer Clan.
Humans wanted to create a miracle, but they inadvertently created monsters.
These Soul Devourers neither identified with their human bloodline nor did they do anything but hate the pure Ice Clan.
They would extract the Snow Souls from their weaker kin and fuse them with their own.
Over time, the most inhuman among the Soul Devourers became their lords.
After I returned to Winterfall City, my vision went black, and I lost consciousness completely.
