Chapter 8
In the sunlight, his expression had a dazed, almost translucent quality. It took him a long while to come back to himself.
“So, are you here to ask me for reimbursement?”
I swear.
That was the most beautiful voice I had heard in more than twenty years of living.
Jiang Boguang himself was tall and thin, with very fair skin, which inevitably made him seem a little pale and aloof. But paired with that clear, flowing voice of his, he somehow gained an air of effortless elegance and nobility.
Even if I wasn’t hopelessly love-struck, I still couldn’t stop my face from heating up.
“Ahem. No. No matter how much money you offer, I’m not giving you the cat.”
Backlit by the sun, his silhouette looked calm and silent. “Then how do you prove this cat is yours?”
As soon as he said that, Director gave a subtle meow between us.
Proving it wouldn’t be hard. After all, the receipt for the cat’s vaccinations was right in my pocket. But if I took it out, then I really would become a cat scammer!
“How about this? Let’s let it decide for itself.”
As I spoke, I retreated to a spot diagonal from the man and crouched down, beckoning lightly to the plump orange cat with one hand.
“Director, come here.”
“Director?”
“Yes.”
He seemed to be holding back a laugh. It almost slipped out, but that smile was like sunlight behind layers of clouds-there for only a brief taste before it vanished.
“Its name is Domingo.”
“Then we’ll each call it by our own name and see who it answers to.”
Jiang Boguang silently agreed. He set down the book in his hand and, copying me, slowly backed up a few steps.
I happened to glance at the book cover.
Huh?
The Little Mermaid?
Before long, the two of us stood on opposite sides, ready for battle, each calling out to our cat.
Fat Orange stood in the middle, looking rather at a loss.
“Domingo, Domingo-”
Jiang Boguang’s voice was obviously more pleasant, more bewitching. Seeing Fat Orange waver, I pretended to lie down while beckoning to the cat.
After a few seconds, Director finally couldn’t resist and ran over, burrowing headfirst into my arms.
Honestly, what cat could resist the temptation of kneading?
I held the big fat orange cat in my arms and deliberately petted it until it purred nonstop. “Good job, Director. Unmoved by riches and honor-what a principled cat you are!”
After that, Jiang Boguang just watched the deep bond between human and cat for a long, long time without saying anything.
Just as I picked up the cat and was about to leave, he suddenly spoke, his tone almost humble.
“Actually, we could raise it together.”
“?”
I rubbed my face, utterly baffled. “I don’t mean anything by this. I just don’t understand… why?”
He lowered his eyes.
His tone wasn’t forceful, yet it was impossible to refuse.
“Because it comforted me.”

The Person Living in the Cat’s Eyes
I suspect my cat has someone on the side.
Lately, it keeps coming home late, and there’s always a sweet cucumber scent lingering on its fur.
Even more infuriating, winter has...
