Chapter 4
Chapter 4
That day, I sat by the table, bitterness welling in my heart.
There were clearly two young ladies in this family, yet the only one anyone acknowledged was Xu Mingyi.
Now, though, I found myself grateful for that.
Grateful that the servant had only said “the young lady of the Xu family,” and not which young lady of the Xu family.
I was also a young lady of the Xu family, wasn’t I?
A plan formed in my mind in an instant. I rushed out of the house and ran to Prince Rui’s Mansion.
The steward of the mansion came out to receive me. I said urgently, “I once saved your prince. He promised me that if I ever ran into trouble, I could come to him!”
The steward looked me over, then replied kindly, “His Highness is not at the mansion. He has entered the palace.”
He told me to come another day.
But I was afraid that before another day came, I would already have been shoved into a bridal sedan. And what if I came another day and he still wasn’t at the mansion?
It couldn’t just be another day after another day forever.
I tried to bargain. “What if I wait? I can wait for him.”
The steward looked very troubled. “No one knows when His Highness will return. If he is kept busy with official duties, he may not be back until night.”
Seeing that I still had no intention of leaving, the steward tried to persuade me again. “The wind is cold in late autumn. Miss, you should go home.”
I couldn’t argue with him, so I could only shuffle slowly away.
But I was not going straight home.
I had a little cleverness in me too. My plan was to get a bit farther from the gates of the mansion, then keep secretly waiting for the prince.
I was very lucky. In the end, I waited him out.
His carriage stopped outside Prince Rui’s Mansion. I immediately went up to him, explained why I had come, and asked him to repay his debt right now.
Liang Xi stood with his hands tucked into his sleeves, his expression unreadable. “You were the one who saved me? Then do you have…”
At this point, he suddenly paused, then sighed instead. “Forget it. What do you want me to do for you?”
“I want you to marry me. Is that all right?”
There was a breath of anger pent up inside me. Since my stepmother wanted to make me marry someone awful, then I would insist on marrying far above her expectations.
I would live well. Better than she did. I would never let her ruin my life.
Liang Xi was shocked. “…”
Liang Xi agreed. “Fine.”
Seeing that I was still lingering and refusing to leave, Liang Xi lifted his chin. “Anything else you require?”
I carefully stole a glance at him. “I’m in a bit of a hurry, so you have to move quickly, all right? Treat it like something important.”
Liang Xi gave a slight nod. “Fine. I understand.”
