Chapter 2
In a lounge at the banquet.
“Has she taken the bait?”
“With Zheng handling it, do you even need to ask?”
Several men walked in.
Hidden on the balcony, I rubbed my legs, numb from crouching.
Finally. I’d known this would be a good place to overhear something!
His long legs encased in suit trousers, Lu Zheng lounged with careless ease on the central sofa.
Seeing his good mood, someone asked:
“What does Song Enyi look like? Some heavenly beauty? How’d she get Zhou Yuheng so obsessed?”
Lu Zheng tugged at his collar without answering.
The second son of the Guan family, sitting beside him, answered instead.
“Fresh-faced. Innocent-looking. Pretty.”
He glanced at Lu Zheng, then added, “But you can tell she’s calculating.”
Someone laughed.
“Isn’t that exactly what Zheng’s first girlfriend was like?”
Dead silence fell.
He’d mentioned the person no one was allowed to mention.
Lu Zheng kicked him. The man made himself scarce.
Everyone there understood. The resemblance was precisely why Lu Zheng disliked me so much.
“Once she bites, what are you going to do?”
Guan Er asked him:
“They’re getting married soon, after all. His girlfriend won’t risk anything right under Zhou Yuheng’s nose.”
Lu Zheng chuckled.
“You never know. Gold diggers are greedy.”
“She deserves to fall hard. That’s what she gets for playing with people’s feelings.”
“Watch yourself,” Guan Er said. “Don’t get caught in your own game.”
Lu Zheng found that even funnier.
“Her? I wouldn’t take her if you handed her to me.”
“Once I record her trying to seduce me and send it to Zhou Yuheng, she’s finished.”
But for half a month after the banquet, Lu Zheng didn’t contact me again.
Then Zhou Yuheng went to North America on business, and I was sent to Hong Kong to follow up on a project.
As I passed my boss’s office, he called me in.
“Enyi, Mr. Lu from the co-investor needs you to bring him the confirmation letter to sign.”
At the surname, my eyebrows lifted slightly.
I took a taxi to the hotel at the address he’d given me. On the way, I opened the LP information sheet on my phone.
And found Lu Zheng’s photograph.
Wild, fierce, impossible to tame. A face made for stardom.
So this was where he’d laid his trap.
But who would end up playing whom was still an open question.
At one thirty in the morning, I arrived outside his hotel room.
I studied my reflection in the window.
I’d gone back to the long, straight black hair I’d worn at university.
If I’d looked forty percent like my former self at the banquet,
now it was seventy percent.
Like the girl I’d been on that typhoon night when Lu Zheng and I first slept together.
I knocked.
Soft footsteps approached from inside. Then the door opened.
At over six feet, Lu Zheng almost completely blocked me from view.
A flirtatious smile curled his lips.
But when he saw me clearly, he froze.
All the blood in his body seemed to rush back toward his heart. A surge of pain swept through his eyes.
As though something had triggered him.
Bang. He slammed the door.
