Chapter 5
Jiang Haoyan and I huddled together, desperately trying to shrink back, but we were tied up so tightly we could barely move. I could only watch helplessly as the snake slithered up my calf.
My leg muscles tensed as the snake’s head reared up high, its vertical pupils glinting with a murderous light.
I lowered my voice, trying my best to stay calm.
“Jiang Haoyan, bite your tongue and spit the blood from the tip onto it. Do it fast.”
Jiang Haoyan nodded, though he looked confused. “It’s a bit hard to aim from my angle. Why don’t you do it yourself?”
“There’s no time! Just do it!”
As soon as the words left my mouth, the snake’s head lunged upward, the cockscomb on its head swelling even larger. At the critical moment, Jiang Haoyan bit the tip of his tongue.
“Tui-”
A mouthful of fresh blood mixed with saliva landed squarely on the snake’s cockscomb.
In the next second, the cockscomb twisted and shriveled, oozing a black, foul-smelling pus. The Man-eating Snake’s body went limp and hit the ground with a thud.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
“That thing is called a Moon Fiend. The moon represents the ultimate Yin, and this creature is formed from the Yin energy of a Mass Grave. It’s incredibly wicked. You’re a virgin, so the blood from the tip of your tongue is of the ultimate Yang-fierce and potent. It’s the perfect counter for it.”
Jiang Haoyan nodded with a solemn expression.
“Only my blood can deal with it? Then stay a bit further behind me.”
Of course-that wasn’t true. My tongue blood would work too, but biting one’s tongue hurts! I simply couldn’t bear that kind of pain.
If I can trouble someone else, I’ll never inconvenience myself.
The others were screaming and fleeing in all directions. Tong Wei remained relatively calm; he fired a few shots at the snakes first. After a moment, he slapped his forehead and pulled a Thunderstruck Wood Talisman from his bag.
“Five Thunders Command!”
A bolt of lightning shot out from the token toward a Man-eating Snake, instantly turning the entire creature into a pile of ash.
My eyes widened.
“My token!”
Tong Wei held the token aloft. Wherever the lightning passed, only wisps of black smoke remained. Exuding an air of overbearing dominance, he moved with flashy footwork, and in no time at all, he had wiped out every single snake.
Tong Wei planted a kiss on the token.
“What a treasure.”
I was fuming.
“Tong Wei, give that back!”
Tong Wei snorted coldly, tucked the token back into his pocket, and patted his chest.
“This is an ancestral treasure from my master.”
Quite a few people had been bitten by the snakes. Tong Wei took his subordinates to treat the wounds and clean up the battlefield, leaving them no time to worry about us for the moment.
After a while, two young men came over and carried Jiang Haoyan and me into a tent.
“Alright, just stay put in here tonight.”
The tent was lined with thick moisture-proof mats, making it much more comfortable than being out in the wind. Just as I was relaxing, the two men returned, carrying another person inside.
My eyes went wide.
“Why are you putting him here instead of dealing with the body?”
The person they had carried in was Yellow Hair, who had been bitten to death by the snakes earlier.
“It’s pitch black out there. What if more snakes show up? We’ll leave him in the tent for the night and find a place to bury him tomorrow morning.”
The two men dusted off their hands and ran off, leaving the corpse behind. Yellow Hair lay flat on his back on the ground, his pant leg rolled up slightly to reveal a section of ghastly white bone.
Frowning, I could only huddle further back with Jiang Haoyan.
“Talk about bad luck.”
Outside, things gradually quieted down. The sounds of talking and walking vanished, leaving only the shrill, whistling howl of the wind.
Leaning against Jiang Haoyan’s shoulder, my eyelids began to grow heavy again.
In a half-asleep, half-awake state, I heard a rustling sound coming from inside the tent.
The moonlight was very bright tonight. Part of the tent was made of transparent plastic in the shape of a window, and the moonlight poured through, shining directly onto Yellow Hair’s corpse.
I saw Yellow Hair raise his hand, scratch at his body for a moment, and then slowly sit up.
