I was squatting on the ground, staring blankly at the body, when a large group of police officers suddenly swarmed through the door.
The receptionist who had given me the key card earlier was there too, peeking out from the middle of the crowd.
“Oh my god! What kind of grudge could lead to this? They cut his head off! That woman is terrifying!”
I stood up.
“Officer, this is all a misunderstanding. The body was already here when I entered. I just checked into this room an hour ago. The receptionist can testify for me.”
The receptionist shrieked.
“I did not! I gave you the key card for Room 8306. Who knows how you ended up in here!”
“The owner of Room 8302 never checked out. Why would I ever open his room for someone else?”
The receptionist rushed into the room, pulled open the nearby wardrobe, and pointed at a suitcase. “Look, his things are still here!”
I was dumbfounded. No wonder I had been able to walk in earlier without even swiping my card; it turned out the room was actually occupied.
“Take her away first. Don’t disturb the scene. Move the body and get a forensic pathologist over here.”
The middle-aged officer in charge gave orders methodically. I wasn’t in a hurry. A Jiangtou Sorcerer of this level would certainly have someone guarding his body. There was no way they would just let a pathologist perform an autopsy on him.
Sure enough, a moment later, a young man came running over in a panic.
“What are you doing?”
“Put my uncle down!”
Realizing the young man shared the room with the victim, the police stopped him and explained the situation. “Don’t get too worked up,” an officer consoled him. “We need to take the suspect back for questioning to clarify the details of the case.”
“Beheaded?”
Upon hearing this, the young man’s face turned beet red. He stammered for a moment before stomping his foot in frustration.
“You… you all shouldn’t interfere! Just leave the body here for now!”
“Hmm? What’s that supposed to mean? Are you two in this together?”
The officer’s eyes narrowed.
“Take him away too!”
The two of us were escorted out of the room. The young man leaned toward me and whispered.
“Little girl, my name is Wen Yan. Don’t be afraid. My master isn’t dead.”
I nodded.
“A Jiangtou Sorcerer can’t leave his body for more than three days. How long has he been out?”
Wen Yan’s eyes lit up.
“A fellow practitioner! Ahem, to be honest, today is the third day. He’ll definitely be back by six p.m. at the latest.”
I glanced down at my phone.
“It’s almost six right now.”
“It’s fine. We’ll just have a word with these officers when the time comes. My master is well-known in this area; everyone shows him respect.”
Wen Yan looked quite proud. We hadn’t intentionally lowered our voices, so a young officer nearby asked curiously, “What are you two talking about? A Jiangtou Sorcerer?”
I nodded.
“Officer, his master is a Jiangtou Sorcerer. He used a Flying Head Jiangtou to go out, and he’ll be back on his own in a bit. He’s not dead.”
The officers froze for a second before bursting into laughter.
“Kids these days are truly ridiculous. They’ll say anything! Brother Chen, did you hear that? Does this make any sense?”
Brother Chen was the middle-aged man in charge. His face hardened as he snapped, “What are you grinning for? This is a murder case. Do you think we’re joking? And you, Qiao Moyu-start acting like a suspect. Shut up and hand over your phone!”
Brother Chen snatched my phone and ID card. I didn’t resist and followed them obediently into the car.
The police station wasn’t far from the hotel. Just as we got out of the car to enter the station gates, I sensed something was wrong.
It was already past six o’clock.
“Officer, could you call the officers staying behind at the hotel? Ask them if that head has come back yet.”
Brother Chen ignored me, but the young officer beside him smiled and pulled out his phone.
“Sure, I’ll ask for you. I’ve never seen a suspect with such a strong psychological state before.”
He dialed his colleague’s number right in front of us and turned on the speakerphone.
“Hello?”
