Chapter 2

Over the past few years, Fu Chi’s business had grown bigger and bigger, and the assets under his name were too many to count.

We had lived in a basement. We had lived in an 800-yuan-a-month rental at Jinxiu Yuan. And now, we lived in a villa worth over a hundred million.

After that day, I still hadn’t waited long enough for Fu Chi to come home, but someone else arrived first.

It was a small private gathering with a few of Fu Chi’s friends. I had no idea how Zhao Sisi had gotten into the inner rooms.

She stopped me in the hallway. The moment she saw me, she was clearly stunned for a second, then curled her lips. “Men really are cheap. No matter how beautiful the flower at home is, they still can’t resist eating shit outside…”

This was her first time meeting me, but it wasn’t my first time seeing her. She was a superstar adored by the masses. Her face was everywhere, even on the corners of the streets.

Before I could say anything, a voice sounded behind me, dripping with mockery. “You sure know yourself well. You even know you’re the shit outside.”

As soon as those words came out, Zhao Sisi seemed to realize how badly she’d put her foot in her mouth. Her expression turned ugly.

I looked back. The person who had spoken was Ji Dongyang, Fu Chi’s childhood friend. He was now Fu Chi’s business partner.

I smiled at him in greeting.

This wasn’t the first time Zhao Sisi had tried to provoke me. Two years ago, she had called once.

After the call connected, she asked smugly, “Ah Chi, will you divorce your wife and marry me?”

I guessed then that she must have been trying to stake her claim.

From the other end of the line came the rustling sound of someone getting dressed. The next second, I heard Fu Chi’s voice, cold and impatient. “Zhao Sisi, if you keep acting like a cheap slut, get the hell away from me.”

“Wait, Ah Chi, you…”

The call was abruptly cut off. I put down the phone and sat there in a daze for a long time.

Two years ago, she had only dared to play tricks in the dark. This time, she had actually walked right in and confronted me. Other than Fu Chi giving her some promise and confidence, I couldn’t think of any other reason.

Even so, I had no interest in wasting words on her. I turned to leave.

But she blocked my path and raised an eyebrow. “Xu Man, you and Ah Chi have been fighting for so many years. There’s no love left between you. If you drag it out until you become a pair of resentful spouses, it won’t look good for anyone. Why don’t you let go sooner and make way for two people who truly love each other?”

I gave a short, mocking laugh and enunciated each word. “Truly love each other?”

She folded her arms, arrogant and self-satisfied. “That’s right. Ah Chi and I truly love each other. In a relationship, the person who isn’t loved should be the one to leave. So, Xu Man, you’re the one who should leave.”

I looked at her coldly and tore away every last pretense. “You knew he was married and still became his mistress, and instead of being ashamed, you’re proud of it. Fu Chi and I are husband and wife. Between us, whether we live or die, stay together or split apart, even if I spend the rest of my life dragging this out with him, it’s still not your place as the other woman to interfere. You stand in front of me acting so high and mighty, telling me to leave. Who do you think you are?”

She seemed frightened by me and took a small step back. Then she placed a hand on her stomach and raised her voice. “Because I’m pregnant with his child!”

My gaze moved to her abdomen before I could stop myself. In that moment, Zhao Sisi’s voice spiraled through my mind, drilling into me with a sharp, piercing pain.

Pregnant? A child… I felt dizzy, as if the whole world had turned upside down.

Seeing me freeze, she lifted her brows and quickly said, “You’ve been married for so many years and don’t even have a child. The one in my belly is his first child. Do you think he’ll marry me for this baby?”

I suddenly laughed out loud. All at once, everything in front of me felt so pointless. It was as if all the strength had drained from my body, leaving my hands and feet weak.

At that moment, Ji Dongyang reached out and steadied me.

“Are you all right?”

I smiled at him. “Did you hear that? Fu Chi’s… first child.”

Ji Dongyang pressed his lips together and said nothing.

Just then, footsteps came from behind Zhao Sisi.

I looked up. It was Fu Chi, whom I hadn’t seen in days.

His face was cold and remote. Over his crisp suit, he wore a black overcoat. His refined, handsome features were drawn tight, his brows deeply furrowed.

Fu Chi glanced at me, his dark, unreadable gaze falling on Ji Dongyang’s hand where it was supporting me.

Zhao Sisi called out to him in delight. The next second, Fu Chi’s face turned icy. Without the slightest mercy, he grabbed her by the hair and asked viciously, “Who let you come in front of her? Are you looking to die?”

Zhao Sisi screamed, sobbing as she cried, “Ah Chi, I didn’t mean to. I… I’m pregnant with your child. Don’t you care about your own child at all?”

Fu Chi stared at her with a sinister look and let out a cold laugh. “Are you sure it’s mine?” He abruptly let go and snapped, “Get out!”

Zhao Sisi clutched her head, no longer daring to look at him. Flustered, she ran out.

After she left, only the three of us remained in the empty hallway. Silence spread for a moment.

Suddenly, Fu Chi tilted his head and looked at Ji Dongyang. “Dongyang, do you like Xu Man?”

At that, Ji Dongyang’s face flushed red, and he stammered, “Wh-what the hell are you talking about?”

Fu Chi didn’t care what he said. His ink-dark eyes locked firmly on me, but his words were directed at Ji Dongyang. “It doesn’t matter if you like her. Xu Man is my wife. In this lifetime, she can only be with me.”

After saying that, Fu Chi withdrew his gaze, turned, and walked out.

I saw Ji Dongyang chase after him and rebuke him in a low voice. “Fu Chi, if you keep doing this, are you really not afraid Xu Man will divorce you?”

The word “divorce” seemed to strike a nerve in Fu Chi. His steps came to a halt. After a long while, he finally replied, “She won’t.”

I looked down at the message Ji Dongyang had sent to my phone: That bastard is only so fearless because he’s relying on the fact that you love him.

Ji Dongyang was a playboy. People said he was a born womanizer. According to him, the reason he still hadn’t gotten married was that he didn’t want his freedom tied down.

Even Ji Dongyang thinks you’re a bastard.

So, Fu Chi, how can you be so sure that I will always, always love you?
