Chapter 3

The male secretary seemed to be in a hurry.

He shoved me aside impatiently.

I wasn’t prepared.

The push sent me stumbling.

My knee slammed hard into the leg of a desk.

The pain made me suck in a sharp breath.

But the male secretary showed no sign of apology.

He only gave me a casual glance.

Then he rushed over to the supervisor and asked, “Excuse me, which one of you is Miss Xia, Xia Tao? President Qin needs to see her about something.”

Xia Tao had been called by name.

And when she heard that Qin Song was looking for her,

she practically sprinted over in two steps.

“I’m Xia Tao. I’m Xia Tao. What is it?”

The male secretary looked her up and down.

His tone became a little more polite.

“Here’s the situation. The president’s office is short a secretary, and President Qin wants you to go up and fill in for a while.”

Xia Tao froze.

Then her voice suddenly rose.

It echoed through the entire office.

“M-Me? President Qin wants me to work by his side? President Qin personally told you that?”

The secretary frowned almost imperceptibly.

Then he smiled and nodded.

“Yes, you. Pack up and come with me.”

Xia Tao covered her mouth.

She couldn’t hide the joy on her face.

Beaming, she went to grab her bag.

“Secretary Li, I don’t really have anything to pack. I can go right now.”

“All right. Follow me.”

Xia Tao pressed her lips together, smiling.

On purpose, she took a detour past me.

With an innocent look on her face, she said, “Xu Yin, make way, okay? President Qin wants me on the thirty-fourth floor now. You’re blocking me.”

“Do your best down here. Maybe after another ten years or so, we might even get to sit at the same desk on the thirty-fourth floor.”

I said nothing.

Enduring the throbbing pain that kept pulsing through my knee,

I silently stepped aside.

Xia Tao, in her sky-high heels,

followed the secretary out in high spirits.

Behind me, my coworkers watched Xia Tao leave with longing eyes.

Then the office exploded into chatter.

“Oh my god, this new girl Xia Tao-she couldn’t be the future boss’s wife, could she?”

“Even if she doesn’t become the boss’s wife, she can still be his girlfriend for a while. The boss is clearly interested in her. He specially transferred her to his side as a secretary.”

“Xu Yin, you came in with Xia Tao, right? Do you know what’s going on between her and the boss?”

When I heard my own name,

I forced down the knot of emotion lodged in my throat.

Slowly, I shook my head.

My voice was so soft it was almost inaudible.

“No… I don’t know…”
