Chapter 3
I thought about it, then clicked accept.
The account on the other side was newly registered, with the default avatar and all profile fields blank.
I sent a message: “Hello.”
The reply came quickly: “Leave the group. Don’t have any contact with those people anymore. They’re not someone you can afford to mess with!”
I played dumb: “Leave what group? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
The anonymous account: “You know which one. ‘Gold Digger Hunting Squad’-that group. You’ve been lurking in there for days, right? You deliberately made contact with Chen Yuan in the game, arranged to meet him, and made him livestream… You know exactly what they’re trying to do. Why are you doing this? To get revenge for those women they toyed with?”
I didn’t reply.
The anonymous account: “Whatever you’re planning, I suggest you stop. These people are all wealthy and powerful. The group is just a boring game they play in their spare time. If they find out you’re just toying with them, you’re finished. Do you know what happened to the last person who crossed them?”
Of course I knew what happened to the last person who crossed them.
Her name was Tao Yun, a senior at Chuancheng University. Three months ago, she jumped to her death on the eve of her graduation ceremony.
We were both orphans with no parents, raised in the same orphanage. I called her sister.
I was born with a big appetite. Because of that, I was always hungry in the orphanage as a child. Tao Yun would always secretly share her food with me, swallowing her own saliva as she watched.
“Can’t help it. You’re the one I picked up off the street; I have to take responsibility for you.”
She had always been a good student since she was little. The old director felt sorry for her diligence and would secretly give her extra eggs and milk. All of it eventually ended up in my stomach.
As I wolfed down the food, enduring the burning hunger and guilt in my gut, Tao Yun would pat her chest and promise: “It’s okay. Once I get into college, find a good job, and make lots and lots of money, you can eat whatever you want. You’ll never have to go hungry again!”
But she broke that promise.
I was furious.
When I go hungry again, who will take care of me?
Fortunately, one of her roommates slipped me a worn diary. She said the rest of her belongings had been disposed of by the school, but she secretly kept this for our friendship’s sake, as a keepsake for me.
What appeared most in the diary was a QQ group called “Gold Digger Hunting Squad”.
After making a dummy account and lurking in the group for a few days, I finally figured out what it was for.
A group of bored, rich kids would use various pretexts to ask out girls who seemed vain and greedy-the “gold diggers”. They’d trick them into spending a lot of money, then refuse to pay, taking pleasure in their ugly meltdowns.
But Tao Yun-I don’t believe she’d fall into their trap because of material temptations.
When I was little and starving, I stole two steamed buns from a pastry shop, and she beat the palm of my hand swollen with a bamboo stick.
She said even the poorest people should hold to their moral bottom line.
She went on and on with a bunch of big principles, like “a gentleman remains steadfast in poverty” and blah blah blah. I forgot the rest because it hurt too much.
Tsk, having a smart sister isn’t all good. Make one small mistake, and you have to endure both physical and mental attacks.
