Chapter 5
After taking Yanyan back to the estate, I returned to the villa.
The professional organizer was already at work.
I took only my important documents.
Before I left, I gave the housekeeper a red envelope of money.
“I’ve spoken to Mrs. Ji. You can go straight to her once you’re finished here.”
“Thank you, Miss Ning.”
The driver took me to the airport.
In the car, I told him, “After this trip, you don’t need to report to me anymore. The company pays your salary. Speak to Qi Sinian about your next assignment.”
With all that settled, I boarded a flight to Nancheng.
Meanwhile, Qi Sinian took Tan Qingqing to the hospital.
She had been badly frightened and was emotionally unstable.
If he moved half a step away, she screamed uncontrollably.
Her face was white, her eyes streaming.
“Uncle, are you going to leave me all alone again?”
At once, Qi Sinian found he couldn’t move.
His friend said, “If you’re that worried, why not take her home with you?”
Qi Sinian took a hard drag on his cigarette.
“Do you remember the younger Li boy?”
“The Li family’s youngest son? Isn’t he terrified of you?”
Qi Sinian shook his head.
“It’s not me he’s afraid of.”
“What?”
“And I wasn’t the one who stabbed through his hand.”
“But…”
But everyone said Qi Sinian was a madman.
At nineteen, he’d dared to drive a knife through someone’s hand, pinning it to a table.
Push him far enough, and he’d even kill.
But who had really seen what happened that night?
They didn’t know it was Ning Yan holding the knife.
She had rushed in, seized the younger Li boy’s hand, and pressed it against the table. The knife rose and fell. One thrust.
It had taken less than five seconds.
So fast that even his scream came a moment late.
Ning Yan was ruthless.
She looked so soft and gentle, as though she had no temper at all.
But she repaid every slight.
Qi Sinian had no doubt that if he hadn’t rushed home yesterday, even if Ning Yan stopped short of killing that woman, she would at least have drawn blood.
How could he dare? How could he dare bring Qingqing back?
“But why? What did the younger Li boy do to make Ning Yan stab through his hand?”
His friend’s casual question made Qi Sinian go rigid.
Everyone in that dim room was laughing.
He lay facedown on the floor, his arms and legs pinned.
The younger Li boy undid his belt, his face full of arrogance and malice.
“Thirsty? Let me give you something to drink.”
…
Qi Sinian closed his fist around the still-burning cigarette.
He tugged at his collar in discomfort and drew a deep breath.
“The reason doesn’t matter. I won’t take that chance with Qingqing.”
