Chapter 3

The next day, Li Mutian came to see me, his face livid.

“You knew full well I liked my junior sister, yet you deliberately ruined things for me.”

I lazily yawned as I combed out my long hair.

“Brother, was I the one who took off your pants for you?”

“We women don’t like men who’ve been dirtied. Brother, you’re dirty now.”

“And you still wanted to hide it from your junior sister. That’s even more shameful.”

I watched his expression in the mirror, the corner of my lips curving slightly.

“Good. Very good!” Li Mutian’s face grew even colder. “My little sister is getting bolder and bolder. I can hardly see through you anymore.”

He swept his sleeve and left.

I had a feeling he was up to no good.

After that, every time we went to the Heavenly Secrets Pavilion to collect supplies, Song Fuyao refused to go.

Li Mutian came looking for Song Fuyao several times, but she avoided him every time. The way he looked at me grew darker and darker.

Not long after, a demon began committing crimes, and I led a team out to exorcise it.

By the time I returned, my fiancé, Third Prince Zhao Yu, had already become thick as thieves with Song Fuyao.

I sneered inwardly. So this was what he had been waiting for.

He had been waiting all this time for me to leave on a demon-slaying mission.

Li Mutian smiled and said, “Little sister, you aren’t angry, are you? Don’t worry. Brother is keeping an eye on things for you. The Third Prince promised me that no matter what happens, you will still be his principal consort. Men are born to have three wives and four concubines, let alone a prince. You won’t hold a grudge, will you?”

I glanced at the top of his head.

The Red Thread there was a tangled mess. I couldn’t find a single proper destined match.

But still, was there any reason to hand over the woman he liked to another man?

“Brother, do you like the color green that much? I think a green hat suits you very well.”

Brother said calmly, “I know you’re very angry, little sister, but I have to tell you: chastity is something only women need. Men don’t.”

He threw his head back and laughed, smug beyond measure.

I stared at his retreating back and felt a little sorry for our mother.

She had gone through untold hardship to give birth to two children, and one day, there was a very real chance those two children would fight each other to the death.

Back when I won the position of Commander of the Demon-Slaying Division, the Division Chief brought both Brother and me to pay respects to His Majesty.

Consort Jin, the Third Prince’s mother, took my hand and slipped the bracelet from her own wrist onto mine.

She smiled warmly.

“I like this girl very much. Looking at her, she seems quite a match for my Yu’er.”

I was about to speak and say I had no interest in marriage.

Brother suddenly cast a Silence Spell on me and accepted the marriage on my behalf.

The emperor spoke, and an imperial edict was bestowed.

I was still young then, and I still cared about the bond between siblings.

I asked Li Mutian why he had done it.

He looked at me and smiled. “Little sister, with your beauty, you will have to marry sooner or later. Isn’t marrying into the imperial family a good thing? A man like the Third Prince is worthy of my sister.”

That was when I understood. Like so many men in this world, he saw his own sister as a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder.

Even though I had just defeated him and become the strongest demon slayer, he still believed he had the right to decide my life for me.
