Chapter 40

“Who does he think he is, saying I’m not good enough! What part of me isn’t good enough? How can he say that about me? He’s just looking down on people!”

Wang Yuanyou was shaking with rage, his words tripping over each other.

“Youyou, you tell him! Do you think I’m good enough or not?”

Wang Yuanyou grabbed Yun Youyou, insisting she play the judge.

Yun Youyou, being a kind person, immediately offered her support. “You’re great! Of course you are! Just look at your nose-it’s shaped so well, not a single blackhead in sight. And your eyes are nice, too; you even have double eyelids!”

Wang Yuanyou was quite pleased at first, but as he kept listening, something started to feel off.

Before he could figure it out, he noticed Ji Lin was spacing out.

“Ji Lin, what are you looking at?”

Dissatisfied, Wang Yuanyou waved a hand in front of Ji Lin’s face to pull his attention back.

Ji Lin’s brow furrowed slightly.

Just now, he had sensed something lurking in the shadows, watching them.

He had been about to extend a portion of his mental power to investigate when Wang Yuanyou interrupted him.

However, since someone-or something-was observing them from the dark, that dark creature would eventually show its hand. There was no need to rush.

Ji Lin pulled his focus back and said indifferently, “It’s nothing.”

Wang Yuanyou didn’t notice the shift and continued pestering Ji Lin for validation.

“That big guy was really out of line, saying I’m not good enough! Ji Lin, we’re best buds. You know me better than anyone. Tell me, am I good enough or not?”

Ji Lin had zero interest in such a pointless question. He leaned lazily against the wall, his tone dismissive.

“You’re good. You’re the best.”

Wang Yuanyou wasn’t satisfied; he was waiting for more specific praise.

“In what way?”

Ji Lin replied, “You’re good at eating.”

Wang Yuanyou: “…”

Before he could decide how to protest Ji Lin’s remark, another nurse approached.

Fang Yu arrived carrying a large vat of porridge. She looked at Yun Youyou and said, “Go hand out the steamed buns to the patients. I’ll handle the porridge.”

Normally, all these menial tasks were dumped on the new nurses.

After all, they were easy targets, and Fang Yu wanted to slack off. However, after her previous encounter with Yun Youyou, she knew this girl wasn’t someone to be trifled with, so she didn’t dare dump the entire workload on her.

“Sure, I’ll go hand them out now.”

Yun Youyou started walking away, intending to tell Wang Yuanyou and the others to go take their seats.

When she turned around, she realized Wang Yuanyou had already vanished. Only Ji Lin remained standing where he was.

Yun Youyou blinked in confusion. “Where did Wang Yuanyou go?”

Without a word, Ji Lin pointed toward the tables in the back.

Yun Youyou followed his finger and saw that Wang Yuanyou was already seated, obediently slurping his porridge.

“…”

Useless at everything else, but the best at eating.

With that level of enthusiasm, it was no wonder Ji Lin said he was good at eating.

Yun Youyou picked up the large basket of steamed buns.

The snowy white buns were still steaming. They weren’t exactly gourmet delicacies, but they had a charm of their own.

Yun Youyou couldn’t resist stuffing one into her own mouth first.

No one can refuse the simple joy of carbohydrates.

Yun Youyou began distributing the buns, two per patient.

When she reached Wang Yuanyou and Ji Lin, she made sure to pick out the two largest ones for them.

Wang Yuanyou’s smile brightened instantly, and he secretly gave Yun Youyou a thumbs-up under the table.
It really was true that no matter where you went, having connections made things easier.

After the distribution was finished, one steamed bun remained.

Yun Youyou held it out to Fang Yu. “Do you want it?”

Fang Yu shook her head.

She had been here for so many years that the mere sight of these buns made her want to gag.

She had been quite shocked to see every single patient show up in the cafeteria today. After all, this was a psychiatric hospital; there was no shortage of difficult patients. In the past, it was a good day if half the patients showed up, and the leftover buns naturally all went to her.

At first, she had actually thought the buns tasted decent, but after eating too many, she felt like vomiting just looking at them.

This new nurse actually had some skill, being able to make so many patients behave so obediently.

Since Fang Yu wasn’t eating, Yun Youyou took the bun for herself and started nibbling on it off to the side.

The two of them didn’t speak, standing there quietly watching the patients eat.

As soon as seven o’clock hit, breakfast time was over.

Fang Yu didn’t care whether the patients had finished eating or not; she began clearing the dishes on her own.

“Don’t just stand there, come over and help.”

Yun Youyou followed Fang Yu’s lead, stuffing any unfinished buns into the patients’ hands and efficiently clearing away the plates.

Fortunately, most of these patients were immersed in their own worlds most of the time. The few Players among them were also obedient and didn’t cause any trouble.

Wang Yuanyou, for his part, had finished every last bite of his breakfast and even helped Yun Youyou clear the plates.

Fang Yu walked over and took the stack of plates from Yun Youyou’s hands.

“I’ll take these to the kitchen. You take the patients to the activity room.”

Over twenty patients were waiting for Yun Youyou’s instructions.

Yun Youyou silently pulled out her megaphone, looking just like a tour guide.

“Everyone, stay close to me. We’re going to the activity room together now.”

Most of the patients stood up obediently.

Only a few remained in their seats, including the two brothers who had previously claimed to be mushrooms.

She wondered what was going on with them this time.

Yun Youyou walked over, leaning down to ask, “What’s the matter now? Have you turned back into mushrooms?”

They had learned their lesson.

“No! We aren’t mushrooms!”

One of them looked up at Yun Youyou and said slowly, “We are great trees growing right here.”

The other one also looked up. “Please move aside. You’re blocking our photosynthesis.”

Yun Youyou: “…”

What was this? Had these two worked in a botanical garden in their past lives? They were certainly obsessed with being plants in this one.

Seeing that Yun Youyou was still standing there motionless, the two shared a look and leaned their bodies in opposite directions.

Yun Youyou asked, “…And what are you playing at now?”

“Two crooked-neck trees trying to get some sun.”

Yun Youyou’s patience finally ran out, and she gave a sinister smile.

“I’m going to count to three. If you don’t move, I’ll use my chainsaw to cut you two crooked-neck trees down and turn you into stools.”

The two crooked-neck trees looked at each other hesitantly.

Should they move or not?

The next second: “Three!”

Yun Youyou had already flipped the switch on the chainsaw.

The two crooked-neck trees: !!!

What happened to ‘one’ and ‘two’?!

The two crooked-neck trees bolted from their seats, sprinting toward the rest of the group.
