Chapter 37

Yun Youyou locked the ward door with a heavy iron chain, stuffed the key into her pocket, and headed back toward the nurse station.

Her footsteps echoed down the long corridor, sounding rather eerie in the silence.

When she returned to the spot from before, the previously empty nurse station was no longer vacant. A woman was sitting there, wearing a nurse uniform identical to Yun Youyou’s.

“Hello.”

When dealing with colleagues, Yun Youyou generally adhered to the principle of “workers shouldn’t make life hard for other workers,” maintaining a friendly attitude toward her peers.

The nurse kept her head down and ignored Yun Youyou entirely.

Yun Youyou didn’t mind the cold shoulder. Offering a greeting was her choice; whether the other person responded was up to them.

However, this colleague was perhaps being a bit too overbearing.

There were only two wooden stools at the nurse station. This nurse had her backside planted on one and her legs stretched out across the other.

Yun Youyou watched her for a moment before asking politely, “Could I trouble you to take your legs down?”

The nurse, who had been looking down, finally reacted.

She looked to be about thirty years old, with a few fine lines at the corners of her eyes. When she looked up, her gaze was filled with impatience.

Facing Yun Youyou’s sincere gaze, she actually let out a scoff and looked back down, even intentionally digging her heels into the other stool.

This provocative gesture and disdainful look hit every single one of Yun Youyou’s pet peeves.

They were both just workers; why did she have to be so difficult?

Fang Yu was a veteran employee of this Instance.

She had been a nurse before she died, and after her death, she continued to serve as a Game NPC in the Instance. Although her abilities were mediocre, she relied on the fact that she had died early and had high seniority, habitually bullying the newly arrived ghosts.

Even if the newcomers were resentful, there was nothing they could do to her.

The new nurse who arrived this time clearly hadn’t been dead long. Her face was as soft and tender as a fresh adult’s; in Fang Yu’s eyes, she was a soft persimmon ripe for the picking.

The nurse before this one had been bullied until she wailed and sobbed. The one before that had been sliced into pieces with a scalpel. And the one before that had been pickled in formalin as a specimen.

How should she torture this nurse this time?

Fang Yu toyed with her fingernails, the corners of her mouth curling slightly. She was clearly in a good mood.

Yun Youyou asked politely, “Excuse me, are your legs grown into that stool?”

Fang Yu shot her a sidelong glance.

“What if they are?”

Yun Youyou paused, then turned and walked away.

Watching Yun Youyou’s retreating figure, Fang Yu felt even better. New employees these days really were getting worse with every generation; running away in a huff so quickly was no fun at all.

Fang Yu crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes, preparing to rest for a bit.

Just as she closed her eyes, a “vroom vroom vroom” sound reached her ears.

It sounded a bit like an electric drill during a renovation.

What was going on?

What kind of renovations was this dump of a hospital doing in the middle of the night?

Confused, Fang Yu opened her eyes and immediately saw Yun Youyou standing before her holding a chainsaw. The girl’s sweet dimples looked as if they were filled with honey, and her almond-shaped eyes were as gentle as water.

She looked at Fang Yu with a beaming smile. “It’s okay if you can’t get your legs down. I can help you saw them off.”

It was no exaggeration to say that in that instant, the hair on the back of Fang Yu’s neck stood on end, and goosebumps broke out all over her body.

“No, no need!”

Fang Yu’s entire nervous system was strained to the limit.

Yun Youyou shook her head considerately, looking directly into Fang Yu’s eyes. “No, you need it.”

In that moment, Fang Yu felt as if she were looking at a demon smiling at her.
The more beautiful a woman was, the more terrifying she truly became.

Seeing the chainsaw about to slice into her leg, Fang Yu retreated in a panic, landing hard on her backside.

She didn’t even have time to speak before scrambling up and bolting away.

Yun Youyou had no intention of letting her off. She gave chase with the chainsaw in hand, shouting as she ran.

“Nurse, there’s no need to be so polite with me!”

Watching Yun Youyou gain on her, Fang Yu was filled with immense regret.

She must have lost her mind to provoke such a lunatic.

The girl looked so soft and weak; who would have guessed she’d pick up a chainsaw and try to saw off someone’s leg the moment they met?

When Fang Yu died, she had at least left behind a whole corpse. She didn’t want to spend her afterlife missing arms or legs.

The two began a life-and-death race down the hospital corridor.

At first, Fang Yu was running, but eventually, she was practically flying.

Yet no matter how fast she went, Yun Youyou was just as quick, even while lugging the heavy chainsaw.

Like a cat toying with a mouse, Yun Youyou trailed behind Fang Yu at a leisurely pace. Whenever Fang Yu slowed down, she would deliberately close the distance, scaring Fang Yu into another frantic sprint for fear of being caught.

Fang Yu was on the verge of a breakdown.

Help!

In her opinion, Yun Youyou was the one who belonged in a mental asylum.

Exhausted to the point of collapse, Fang Yu turned back to look at the chainsaw in Yun Youyou’s hands. “Just how long is your power cord?!”

Logically, after running for so long, the plug should have been ripped out ages ago.

“Don’t worry, I found a very long extension cord. It doesn’t matter even if we run ten laps around the hospital.”

Yun Youyou held up the long cord to show Fang Yu.

Fang Yu: !!!

“I’m not running anymore! I’m dead tired!”

Seeing the length of that cord, Fang Yu simply gave up.

She collapsed onto the floor, panting heavily.

Even the strongest will to survive had been drained away by this eight-kilometer sprint.

At this moment, she finally realized that this new nurse was not someone to be trifled with.

Under the threat of the chainsaw, she had no choice but to swallow her pride. She said humbly, “Please, let me go. I’ll listen to you from now on. I’ll do whatever you say.”

Yun Youyou looked down at her, not missing the flicker of resentment in her eyes.

Even if she was begging for mercy now, it was merely a stalling tactic.

But Yun Youyou didn’t care.

A nurse’s job was too exhausting; she needed an assistant.

So, for the limited duration of this Instance, she decided to bind herself to this chainsaw.

With a chainsaw in hand, the world was hers!

After all, who wouldn’t be terrified of a Chainsaw Maniac?

Yun Youyou and Fang Yu shook hands and made peace, though the smiles on both sides were incredibly fake.

The two sat back down in the seats by the nurse’s station, acting all friendly.

This time, the two ghosts each had their own stool; no one tried to steal from the other.

The night was long.

The two of them just sat there for the entire night.

At six in the morning, the alarm clock on the nurse’s station rang.

The windows were sealed with black tape, so the only way to know the time was to check the clock.

Fang Yu gave a fake laugh. “Shall we go wake the patients?”

Yun Youyou returned an identical fake smile. “Sure.”

The two took the keys from the drawer and unlocked the iron chain on the first ward door.

Fang Yu said politely, “Nurse Yun, you go in first.”

Yun Youyou smiled courteously. “No, after you, Nurse Fang.”

Wang Yuanyou pulled the door open from the inside, yawning as he said, “How about neither of you come in?”

These were probably the two most polite ghosts he had ever seen.

(A completely brainless, silly story)

Yun Youyou opened her eyes and found that she had inexplicably become an NPC in a Horror Game.
