Chapter 2

I had always been steady in the way I handled things, but hearing the truth still left me dazed.

When I returned to the private room, my face was deathly pale.

The client looked worried. “Are you feeling sick? Why don’t we talk another day? I’ll take you home.”

I thanked him and said, “I’d like to be alone for a while.”

The client got up and took his leave.

Once I was the only person left in the room, my eyes still reddened despite myself.

I thought six years of waiting was enough to prove a person’s sincerity. I never imagined it had been a complete and utter scam.

Huo Yanxu and I could be considered childhood sweethearts. Our parents were close, and we had played together since we were little.

When we reached school age, we both attended Gangcheng’s most famous aristocratic school, Jukui Academy.

He was different from many rich young heirs. His personality was gentle and reserved.

Arguments between classmates were inevitable. Plenty of those privileged boys bullied the weak and feared the strong, and some even picked on other students.

Huo Yanxu was gentle and approachable with everyone. Even when others bullied him, as long as they didn’t go too far, he would just smile it off.

Huo’s Father was extremely strict. If his children caused trouble outside, they would definitely be punished. Those who refused to change after repeated discipline would be abandoned entirely.

Huo’s Father had married three wives and had eight children in total. He did not favor sons over daughters. Any one of them had a chance to become the heir.

Those children also knew very well that the reason they could enjoy lives better than ordinary people’s and possess privileges in certain fields was simply because they had been born into the right family and had a powerful father.

Without that father, they were nothing.

So all of his children obeyed Huo’s Father without question.

Among the children of the Huo Family, Huo Yanxu was not particularly brilliant, but his face was exceptional.

His features were handsome and refined, his temperament clean and clear. A talent scout had once handed him a business card.

Huo Yanxu had once dreamed of becoming a star, but Huo Grandfather hated the entertainment industry more than anything, so he could only fantasize about it. At home, he did not dare mention a single word.

I once asked him, “Do you have any dreams?”

Huo Yanxu smiled at me. “You are my dream.”

My heart had been filled with sweetness.

In truth, I did not have any grand ambitions either. A home, a meal on the stove, and a man who loved me would have been enough.

My family ran a pharmaceutical factory. In college, I studied pharmacy, while he, whose grades were only average, stayed in Gangcheng for university.

We were separated by thousands of miles, but we called each other several times a day and shared the interesting little things in our lives.

Every weekend, he would travel all that way to see me.

Hand in hand, we wandered through every street and alley. Behind the flower beds on campus, we kissed in secret. We promised each other that we would get married as soon as we graduated.

But in my junior year, two things happened that forcibly changed the course of my life.

The first was that the financial crisis pushed my family’s pharmaceutical company to the brink of bankruptcy. Although my older brother did everything he could to turn the tide, his heart was willing but his strength was not enough.

My father hoped I could become one of the family’s pillars of support. To improve my expertise and build more connections, I applied to Harvard Medical School. After working hard, I was successfully admitted.

The second was that Huo Yanxu’s mother’s affair with a male model was exposed by the paparazzi. Huo’s Father found it disgraceful, divorced Huo Yanxu’s mother, and not long after, married his third wife.

Huo Mother was devastated. She left behind her son and daughter and went abroad. From then on, Huo Yanxu and his younger sister became people whose father did not care for them and whose mother did not love them.

To prove his loyalty to Huo’s Father, Huo Yanxu stayed in Gangcheng after graduating from university and went to work at a hotel under the Huo Family’s name.

Four years of a long-distance relationship had already been torment for both of us. Once I left, I had no idea how many years it would take. Thinking of the heavy burden on my shoulders, I did not dare delay him any longer, so I proposed breaking up with Huo Yanxu.

“I’ll wait for you. I’ll wait for you.”

Huo Yanxu took my hand. A grown man nearly six feet tall cried like a helpless child.

I told him that since we had been born into privileged families, we naturally carried the responsibility of helping our families prosper.

We could not live only in our own world of love.

I could not bear to be too cruel, so I said, “If we’re meant to be, there will be a time when we meet again.”

Back then, I silently made up my mind. I would do everything I could to carve out a place for myself, for me and also for Huo Yanxu.

Harvard gathered the world’s top medical talent. During my six years abroad, I studied day and night, forgetting food and sleep, not daring to slack off for even a moment.

Later, I pursued a doctorate, established my own laboratory, and achieved several notable accomplishments in the medical field.

When I returned to the country, I saw Huo Yanxu among the crowd there to pick me up.

With red-rimmed eyes, he said, “I’ve been waiting for you all this time. Do you still want me?”
