Chapter 4
Chapter 4
After graduation, she worked at a television station as an intern director for a while, but resigned before long.
During that time, if she had called me even once, every problem she faced would have been solved.
But I never received that call.
Only later did I find out that she had casually tossed my business card onto the shoe cabinet and used it to open packages.
It worked very well.
So from then until now, I have never used metal business cards again.
After quitting, she founded her own studio and devoted herself to writing scripts. Her boyfriend stayed by her side the entire time.
I saw them countless times, walking hand in hand down streets lit by the setting sun, buying fresh meat and vegetables from the market to take home and cook. The two of them were always smiling, no matter how hard life in Jingshi was.
Just like that, summer turned to autumn.
Then came the snowy winter, the season when she put on a pale yellow down jacket.
The season when her boyfriend braved the snow to go out and returned through the drifts, bringing her freshly roasted sugar-fried chestnuts.
She saw him come back from upstairs and raced down, not even stopping to put on a scarf. Her smile bloomed so brightly, so brilliantly. Hiding in the distance, I heard her say, “A man coming back from the hunt is way too handsome.”
Chestnuts. They were just sugar-fried chestnuts! I could buy her a whole truckload. No, I could fill that entire building with them.
But she didn’t need chestnuts from me.
Jealousy erupted like a volcano on that snowy night.
I have always been a despicable man, and I have never been stingy about carrying that despicableness through to the end.
I did not even wait until the New Year. I made a phone call and arranged for her boyfriend to receive an offer from a well-known company back in his hometown.
A high salary, a position matching his field, and close to home.
They began to argue.
Not long after that, her boyfriend’s mother came to Jingshi in person, blocked them downstairs, said some very nasty things, and finally took her precious son back to their hometown.
It took my wife only a single afternoon to clear out everything that man had left behind and throw it all into the trash.
I was practically elated. I urged the sanitation worker to hurry up and haul the garbage away, but he was old and moved slowly, so I had no choice but to help him.
I had never done anything like that before, but I enjoyed every second of it.
Unexpectedly, joy turned to sorrow. The moment I finished and turned around, my wife was standing not far away, staring at me. With a faint, almost-smile tugging at the corners of her mouth, she said thoughtfully, “Mr. Rong… you really do enjoy helping others.”
She scared me half to death. There was no way I could keep from getting nervous. “It’s just a little hobby of mine.”
A trace of confusion flashed quickly through her eyes. After a moment, she said, “How environmentally friendly.”
I watched her walk away and let out a breath of relief.
…
At the beginning of the new year, the script she had spearheaded became a modest hit.
In the screenwriting world, Zhuang Chengjing went from an unknown nobody to a rising talent in just half a year.
I knew it. She was amazing.
And I brought her luck, too.
Mm. At least a little bit of luck.

I used every trick in the book to marry my wife.
In front of others, she refused to acknowledge me. Behind closed doors, she kept me at an even colder distance.
I knew she hated...
